'What's the point?' Trump plan for victory rally draws warning from ex-DHS official

A decision by Donald Trump and his inner circle to hold what they are calling a "Make America Great Again Victory Rally" in Washington, D.C., the night before his inauguration is being called into question by a former director of Department of Homeland Security.

On the same day that New Orleans suffered a mass casualty attack on New Year's Eve revelers, followed by an explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck in front of a Trump hotel in Las Vegas that is being investigated as a possible terrorist attack, Trump's people announced plans for the rally on January 19th at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

Appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," ex-DHS head Jeh Johnson told host Jonathan Lemire that the short notice, in light of the attacks, will present a problem for security.

"Let's go back to the idea of this rally that Trump is holding in Washington," Lemire prompted his guest before pressing, "In light of our conversation all morning long, let's talk about security for these events."

After pointing out the inauguration is "designated a national special security event," Johnson continued, "To put in the middle of those two events a very gigantic presidential level rally presents a significant security challenge in terms of resources, manpower, so it's not as simple as just throwing a big party on short notice."

"You've got to put a lot of security in place when you have the person about to become president in this current threat environment, which we just talked about a few minutes ago," he continued. "So I hope the president-elect and his team carefully considered that before they decided to have this large rally."

"I would have thought that some of the very same people that are coming to the inauguration would go to the rally, so kind of, what's the point?" he asked.
