Super Head

Milwaukee girded for massive convention protests. But they got something else.

MILWAUKEE — It was Tuesday evening, and roughly a dozen men dressed in matching orange T-shirts labeled “staff demonstration event safety” sat around a folding table at Haymarket Square.

Here in this free speech zone outside the Republican National Convention’s well-patrolled security perimeter stood a stage, podium, microphone and amplification system ready for someone to make a speech.

How much access did $50,000 buy someone at the Republican National Convention?

MILWAUKEE — An open secret about national conventions: the real action is often outside the convention hall, blocks or even miles away from where a political party will formally nominate its presidential candidate.

And this week in tony restaurants, trendy bars, hotel ballrooms and entertainment venues across Milwaukee, corporate lobbyists, megadonors and conservative advocacy organizations will engage in the age-old tradition of using money to influence politics.

Exclusive: Harris? Newsom? Whitmer? GOP delegates dish on who they want Trump to face

MILWAUKEE — With Republican faithful preparing for Donald Trump’s presidential nomination acceptance speech tonight at the Fiserv Forum, GOP conventioneers are split on which Democrat — President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, someone else — would be the easiest Democrat to defeat.

Many MAGA faithful want Biden to remain the Democratic nominee because of his perceived frailty. But they aren’t particularly worried, either, about Harris as a potential substitute if Biden drops out, because she’s inextricably linked to the administration’s record, which they view as damaged.

‘Staying in race’: Aides stick to message as stunning report suggests Biden about to quit

MILWAUKEE — President Joe Biden’s campaign is “not working through any scenario” where the president quits the 2024 election and yields to Vice President Kamala Harris, a top campaign official said this morning.

Trump and God: Religion raises the stakes at Republican convention

MILWAUKEE — The religious fervor apparent from the very start of the Republican National Convention crescendoed to the point when a Donald Trump-impersonating pastor came on stage the first night.

“We are made in God's image, amen, and we won't shy away from speaking that simple truth ever,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on Monday.

Exclusive: Trump ‘secretary of retribution’ won't discuss his ‘target list’ at RNC

MILWAUKEE — The self-styled “secretary of retribution” for Donald Trump who’s circulating a 350-person “target list” of politicians, bureaucrats and journalists had nothing to say about his plans when approached by Raw Story reporters Wednesday at the Republican National Convention.

Raw Story attempted to ask Ivan Raiklin about his stated desire to conduct “live-streamed swatting raids” against individuals on his “target list.” Also of interest: his efforts to work with largely rural, conservative county sheriffs to deputize some 75,000 military veterans to arrest people on his list.

Donald Trump is a clown, according to clowns

MILWAUKEE — Just outside the security perimeter of the Republican National Convention, across the river from where thousands gathered in support of Donald Trump for president, a gaggle of clowns held court.

They were older clowns, honking horns and proudly displaying their homemade clown cart, featuring circus music and a papier-mâché Trump head adorned with a red tie.

Republicans play dumb over Jared Kushner while decrying Bob Menendez corruption

MILWAUKEE — Senate Republicans gathered at the Republican National Convention are predictably pressuring Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) to resign his office after a federal jury found him guilty on 16 counts, including accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes and acting as a foreign agent.

But those same Senate Republicans shrug off concerns about Jared Kushner — President Donald Trump's son-in-law and a former senior adviser — who many Democrats accuse of corruption involving his private equity firm, Affinity Partners, and its $2 billion business deal with the Saudi crown prince.

Republicans featured homeless veterans. They went silent when police killed one.

MILWAUKEE — As delegates gathered for the second day of the Republican National Convention under the theme of “Make America Safe Once Again,” prominent speakers made the plight of American military veterans a recurring theme.

“They give illegal immigrants free hotel rooms while homeless veterans sleep on the streets,” Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) said during his speech on Monday night. “Disgusting.”
