Several staffers at one of television's most storied news programs turned down a high-profile election assignment because of worries about their own boss.

A handful of '60 Minutes' producers passed on working with newly hired correspondent Ross Douthat on a segment about Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, fearing interference from CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss, the media newsletter Status reported Thursday.

The assignment ultimately went to Keith Sharman, a producer who frequently works alongside Norah O'Donnell. Executive producer Nick Bilton elevated Sharman to senior broadcast producer earlier this month after a veteran producer retired, according to an internal memo Status obtained....

Barnstorming the country in the final weeks of the midterm campaign, President Donald Trump has unleashed a new tactic in his frustrated effort to overturn the elections: assailing the qualifications of Democratic candidates for Congress.

While baselessly claiming that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) “used a fake name,” Trump assured supporters in Iowa last week that “she will not be allowed to be a member of that august body any longer,” while falsely claiming the Democratic Party had “conceded her seat.” The president repeated the swipe against Omar in campaign stops in Florida and Mississippi.

Then, while campaigning in Michigan on Sunday, Trump attacked Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed by falsely labeling him a “jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member,” claiming “he would be the only senator that will have to go through a metal detector” and equating him to the Islamic terrorists who hijacked United Flight 93 and attempted to fly it into the U.S. Capitol on Sept. 11, 2001....

A young voter's on-camera concern about a Democratic Senate nominee left political observers stunned as a short clip ricocheted across social media.

On Thursday, journalist Richard Gaisford shared a roughly 30-second exchange with a 19-year-old voter in Detroit who was worried about the name of Abdul El-Sayed, the Democrat running for Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat.

"He doesn't even say his real name," the teenager said. "Like, why can't you share your real name?"...

Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed mocked his Republican rival after a simple yes-or-no question left the GOP candidate squirming on live television.

During Wednesday's debate on Detroit-area news station WXYZ Channel 7, moderators closed with a lightning round and asked both men whether they support universal background checks for gun purchases. El-Sayed said yes. Former Rep. Mike Rogers, who is endorsed by Trump, couldn't settle on an answer.

"It all depends," Rogers said as moderators pressed him for a yes or no. "That's all we have time for," one moderator stressed....

CNN anchor Jake Tapper had to apologize to his panel after a debate about a controversial left-wing streamer became too heated.

On Thursday, Tapper had a segment about Hasan Piker and his interview with Axios that led to Piker walking off. Tapper had on Democratic political operative Karen Finney and MAGA pundit Jesse Arm, who works as the vice president of external affairs for the Manhattan Institute.

Both Finney and Arm agreed that Piker was controversial. Arm, however, irked Finney while going on about how Piker affected the Senate campaign of Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, as El-Sayed is often asked about his alignment with Piker's views....

The Detroit News endorsed Michigan's Republican Senate candidate this week, and its readers answered with a torrent of mockery and disbelief.

In an editorial, the conservative-leaning paper's editorial board threw its weight behind former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), who has pushed false claims about the 2024 election in Michigan, per reporting by Democracy Docket. The board favored him over Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and called Rogers the ideal choice for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Gary Peters in the November 3 midterms.

"Mike Rogers is the prototype of a United States Senator," the board wrote, praising his experience, "clear thinking" and temperament while dismissing El-Sayed as a candidate with "little to recommend him" for the job....
