Todd Blanche poses 'huge threat' with 'permanent' victory in hardline crackdown: expert

Attorney General Todd Blanche poses a "huge threat" as he's poised to wield the Justice Department against abortion rights, a Guardian columnist warned.

In a Saturday opinion piece, legal columnist Moira Donegan flagged how the newly confirmed attorney general is positioned to complete the transformation of the DOJ into an instrument restricting access to mifepristone nationwide. In the piece, titled "Trump’s new attorney general poses a huge threat to abortion rights," she described Blanche as "an anti-abortion zealot" who has been "shockingly subservient" to Trump.

Blanche "seems poised to complete the president's long-brewing transformation of the country's chief law enforcement agency into a vehicle for score settling, personal vendettas, distributing favors to the administration's friends and suppressing dissent from its political enemies," Donegan wrote....

C-SPAN caller cut off after anti-woman rant on Harris: 'How many abortions has she had?'

A C-SPAN host disconnected a caller on Sunday after a misogynist attack on Vice President Kamala Harris.

During C-SPAN's Washington Journal program, a woman named Sarah called in from Indiana to say she would not vote for Harris in the 2024 presidential race because she was a woman.

"I just want to say, not at this time should there be a woman in there," the caller explained. "We're affiliated with two wars right now, and our leaders in other countries are sitting back laughing at us. She's weak."...

Arizona activists move for vote to put abortion rights in state constitution

Activists in Arizona are seeking a statewide vote to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, reported NBC News on Tuesday.

"The coalition — led by the ACLU of Arizona, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona, NARAL Arizona and several other women’s health advocacy groups based in the state — will take the form of a new political action committee called Arizona for Abortion Access," reported Adam Edelman. "The groups seek to place a constitutional amendment on the November 2024 ballot that, if passed, would enshrine abortion rights into the state’s constitution."

Candace Lew, chair of Arizona for Abortion Access, said of the new effwort, “Since the fall of Roe, we have seen our communities come together as a multigenerational and multiracial movement for reproductive freedom to fight for Arizonans’ fundamental rights, and this ballot initiative will continue to build on this momentum. Thousands of Arizonans will power this grassroots effort to not only pose this question to voters, but ensure it passes next November.”...

Is Roe safe? Absolutely not.

Is Roe safe? Absolutely not.

I have to admit, I was genuinely surprised that readers of this blog showed up in comments on this post to spread the glib myth that abortion rights aren't actually under real threat in this country.  This is a myth that has two major proponents: glib liberal men who use it as a way to insinuate that pro-choice activists are hysterical bitches who need to calm down and let a rational male presence set their priorities, and people who voted for Ralph Nader and don't want to admit that there's any difference between Democrats and Republicans, which requires pretending that the Supreme Court appointments don't matter. Ironically, these two couldn't be more different in many ways, but they share a glibness that I suppose causes the sort of dogpiling-based-on-ignorance that was occurring in that thread.
