GOP Senate candidate snubs major lobby that spent millions to clear his path: report

A Republican Senate nominee has quietly urged one of the nation's most powerful pro-Israel lobbying groups to stay out of his race.

Michigan's GOP nominee for the Senate, Mike Rogers, reportedly met with AIPAC's chair in Los Angeles last week, and a day later, the organization pulled an ad it had already produced attacking his Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, according to reporting by Axios.

Axios reported that Rogers' campaign asked AIPAC not to advertise on his behalf. The request has fractured his relationship with AIPAC and laid bare how radioactive the group has become even among the Republicans it wants to help, according to Axios....

Outside spending in the 2024 election cycle has surpassed $1 billion, outpacing prior election cycles, according to a new OpenSecrets analysis of federal campaign finance reports.

Super PACs and other outside groups that can raise and spend unlimited sums of money have poured about $1.1 billion into 2024 federal elections as of Aug. 15 — nearly twice what similar groups spent over the same period in the 2020 presidential election cycle when independent expenditures hit an all-time record. ...

Home Depot's political committee just got jacked

A political action committee for a ubiquitous home improvement company is doing some financial renovations in the wake of fraud, according to a new financial filing.

The Home Depot Inc., PAC reported to the Federal Election Commission that it experienced theft of $7,500 in December due to an "erroneous bank debit."

"The PAC has taken action to prevent this from happening in the future by closing that bank account and opening a new account," said a report to FEC from May 8. "In addition, the PAC is using positive pay through the bank to prevent any future occurrences."...

Is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s ‘Squad’ dying?

WASHINGTON — “The Squad” — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) tight knit band of progressive rabble-rousers — is still making headlines.

But lately, it’s for all the wrong reasons.

After a string of scandals, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) are both facing AIPAC-backed primary challengers this year. Bowman’s troubles include pleading guilty to pulling a fire alarm in the Capitol, over which House Republicans censured him. Bush, meanwhile, is under investigation by the FBI for paying her husband for security services....

Kevin McCarthy just got jacked

A thief nabbed a $3,000 check sent by a political committee led by former House Speaker Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) — the latest instance in an epidemic of thefts involving political committees, according to a Raw Story review of federal campaign records.

A July 2023 check intended for a photographer was “stolen during the USPS mail process and fraudulently cashed,” according to the McCarthy Victory Fund’s year-end report filed with the Federal Election Commission on Jan. 31.

The report indicated that the committee filed a police report, and there were “no wrongdoers or bad actors within the committee.”...
