Alex Murdaugh crushed by judge after making groveling apologies to victims: report

Disgraced former South Carolina lawyer and convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh, already serving a life sentence, was given an additional 27 years in prison for defrauding clients and partners at his law firm on Tuesday — and the presiding judge showed no mercy as he tore into Murdaugh following his prostrate apology, reported The Daily Beast.

“It is so important to me that you know how bothered I am by the things that I did,” Murdaugh, who had pleaded guilty to the embezzlement offenses, told the court at his sentencing, apologizing to his family and to his surviving son, while bemoaning his drug addiction and continuing to deny his guilt in the murders of his wife and other son.

But Judge Clifton Newman was unmoved by Murdaugh's words....

S.C. prosecutors call Murdaugh jury tampering appeal a 'conspiracy theory'

Convicted double murderer Alex Murdaugh's appeal to overturn his verdict and seek a new trial is being combatted by state prosecutors, calling the claims that the Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill engaged in jury tampering as "conspiracy theory".

“Never does the law permit highly motivated convicts to put their own jury on trial,” reads a 25-page Tuesday filing in Colleton County state court signed by the state Attorney General as well as three state prosecutors, and cited by The State.

It added that the incarcerated embezzler and disbarred attorney, who is currently serving life in prison without parole for the slayings of his wife Maggie, and son Paul at their family's hunting estate back in the summer of 2021....

Alex Murdaugh loses prison privileges after interview from behind bars: report

Disgraced former South Carolina attorney and convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh has had his prison phone call and tablet privileges revoked after improperly giving an interview for a Fox Nation documentary from behind bars, reported The Daily Beast on Wednesday.

"The South Carolina Department of Corrections said that Murdaugh’s lawyer helped him record an interview subsequently given to producers for the forthcoming Fox Nation documentary The Fall of the House of Murdaugh," reported AJ McDougall. "In a note to the attorney, Jim Griffin, a department official accused him of recording Murdaugh as he read aloud entries from a journal he’d kept over the course of his trial during a June 10 call."

This type of communication is not allowed in the South Carolina prison system....

Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh's accomplice pleads guilty to embezzling from legal clients

Cory Fleming, a disgraced former South Carolina attorney who worked alongside convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh, has pleaded guilty to state charges that involve helping Murdaugh embezzle millions from clients at their law firm, The State reported on Wednesday.

According to the report, prosecutor Creighton Waters is pushing to throw the book at Fleming, although no sentencing recommendations have yet been released.

"Waters spent nearly an hour citing minute details of Fleming’s crimes, the largest of which involved a complex $4.3 million white collar theft orchestrated by Murdaugh to steer funds from an insurance settlement to Fleming and Murdaugh. Normally, at guilty pleas, prosecutors keep their summations of evidence brief," said the report, which noted that another Murdaugh accomplice, Russell Laffitte, was also present in the courtroom. "Laffitte, a former banker who was convicted in federal court last November, also faces state charges for those schemes. He was in court so his lawyers could discuss various pre-trial technical matters with Newman and Waters. Laffitte is appealing his federal sentence."...
