Justice Sam Alito shamed as 'absolute embarrassment' over case involving billionaire pal

Justice Sam Alito shamed as 'absolute embarrassment' over case involving billionaire pal

A Supreme Court justice branded an "absolute embarrassment" has thrown the judiciary into a state of mistrust, an analyst accused Wednesday.

Justice Sam Alito was slammed for his refusal to recuse himself from a case concerning oil executive hopes of a climate claim in Colorado. Alito's connections to the case are well documented, with Slate writer Hannah Story Brown noting the stocks the judge has in the oil industry. But a personal relationship with Paul Singer, the billionaire founder and president of the hedge fund Elliott Investment Management, makes Alito's part in the case particularly questionable, Brown wrote.

Singer's firm holds major investments in Suncor, one of two companies involved in the Colorado climate suit. Alito's private stocks should be enough to have him recuse from the case, but the ties with Singer are an "absolute embarrassment," Brown wrote....

'Check the flagpole': Speculation swirls about Samuel Alito's absence in Supreme Court

For the second day in a row, Justice Samuel Alito hasn't been at the U.S. Supreme Court as judges read rulings on the final cases that remain to be decided in June.

The absence comes a little over a week after Alito and his wife were exposed for a conversation he had with a liberal activist. Both individuals agreed that the country must return to "Godliness" and that the "other side" is going to "win." According to Justice Alito, winning is essential "because there are differences on fundamental things that really can’t be compromised. They really can’t be compromised."

The comments from Alito came after he was exposed for flying an upside-down flag at his home. The flag became a symbol for Capitol rioters on Jan. 6. Another far-right Christian flag carried by the rioters was also flown at their vacation house. ...

'Give us a break': Right-wing radio host goes down in flames for attack on Justice Merchan

A right-wing media personality complained on Sunday that Justice Juan Merchan was biased against Donald Trump, but was met with some intense backlash.

Conservative media personality Erick Erickson, the founder of Red State, took to social media over the weekend to a make a case that Merchan was more biased than Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, who said his wife flew an upside down flag in response to a Trump-related neighborhood dispute.

Merchan oversaw the New York criminal hush money cover-up case, where Trump was recently found guilty by a jury of his peers on 34 felony counts of business records fraud....

Trump ally files complaint against sitting judge for 'political screed' at Justice Alito

Trump ally files complaint against sitting judge for 'political screed' at Justice Alito

A federal judge is on the defense by a Donald Trump ally for publishing a New York Times Op-Ed rebuking Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and saying the upside-down American flag and "Appeal to Heaven" flag placements erode trust.

Mike Davis, the founder of the Article III Project, a collective that works to get conservative judges nominated on the bench, slammed Judge Michael Ponsor, who was appointed by former President Bill Clinton in 1993, for “a curiously timed and unprecedented political screed” aimed at Alito.

“Facts, logic, ethics, and good judgment did not dissuade Judge Ponsor a week later when he decided to moonlight as a New York Times guest columnist on Mrs. Alito’s flag-flying past," according to a complaint letter addressed to the Judicial Council of the First Circuit and first published by The New York Post. "Judge Ponsor’s essay goes well beyond the bounds of appropriate judicial speech."...

'Real sick stuff': Experts horrified by revelation that Alito flew a second extremist flag

'Real sick stuff': Experts horrified by revelation that Alito flew a second extremist flag

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was exposed on Wednesday by The New York Times for having flown yet another extremist symbol, this time an "Appeal to Heaven" pine flag at his beach house — an old revolutionary symbol that in recent years has been used predominantly by the extreme Christian nationalist movement, and was also commonly flown by rioters trying to stop election certification at the Capitol on January 6.

This comes after revelations there was a "distressed" upside-down flag at his primary residence around the time January 6 was unfolding, another MAGA symbol which he claimed his wife had put up as part of a dispute with a neighbor's anti-Trump sign.

The new report has a new round of commenters on social media criticizing the far-right justice — and questioning the excuse he made for the original flag incident....

MAGA symbol was visible on Samuel Alito's property as Supreme Court weighed election case

MAGA symbol was visible on Samuel Alito's property as Supreme Court weighed election case

Far-right Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's property was flying an upside-down American flag — a known MAGA "Stop the Steal" symbol — right around the same time that the Supreme Court was deciding whether to take up a challenge to the 2020 election brought by the Republican Party of Pennsylvania.

According to The New York Times, "The upside-down flag was aloft on Jan. 17, 2021, the images showed. President Donald J. Trump’s supporters, including some brandishing the same symbol, had rioted at the Capitol a little over a week before. Mr. Biden’s inauguration was three days away. Alarmed neighbors snapped photographs, some of which were recently obtained by The New York Times. Word of the flag filtered back to the court, people who worked there said in interviews. While the flag was up, the court was still contending with whether to hear a 2020 election case, with Justice Alito on the losing end of that decision."

Alito denies having put up the flag himself, saying that, “It was briefly placed by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbor’s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.” His wife was involved in a dispute with a neighbor over an anti-Trump sign in their yard....
