The American Legislative Exchange Council, a secretive alliance of big businesses and largely Republican state legislators who co-operate to push a right-wing political agenda in the American hinterland, is continuing to wield outsized influence over gun laws across the US despite its promise in the wake of the Trayvon Martin furore to stop operating in this area.

Progressive and liberal groups scored another victory on Tuesday when insurance giant Blue Cross Blue Shield confirmed that it was ending its relationship with the conservative American Legislative Exchange Counsel (ALEC).

A state senator from Georgia, Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) has left the American Legislative Exchange Council, the controversial legislative organization better known as ALEC.  In a statement to the citizens' action group Better Georgia, Orrock denounced the group, calling it "radical," "dangerous" and accused it of "impeding democracy."
