Embattled MAGA candidate loses key Tennessee primary race

Embattled MAGA candidate loses key Tennessee primary race

A major Tennessee primary has been called on Thursday night, deciding the fate of a scandal-plagued MAGA lawmaker.

Rep. Andy Ogles has lost re-nomination against his primary opponent, former Tennessee Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher, according to calls from the Associated Press and NBC News.

He represents Tennessee's 5th District, a snaking gerrymander that stretches from Memphis to the Kentucky border to the southern exurbs of Nashville. It was one of a number of districts chopped to pieces by the Donald Trump-endorsed redistricting of the state earlier this year....

'This isn't intended as satire': Columnist attacks GOP over latest 'sycophantic' grovel

In a new piece about the GOP's latest "sycophantic" push to curry favor with President Donald Trump, MSNBC columnist Steve Benen felt compelled to include a caveat: "In case there are any doubts, this isn't intended as satire."

New legislation put forth by Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) to make Trump's birthday a federal holiday is just the latest in a one-upmanship competition revealing "a larger pattern that’s worth appreciating" among the GOP, according to Benen.

Tenney introduced the bill last week to combine Trump's birthday observance with Flag Day on June 14 as an all-in-one federal holiday to "recognize him as the founder of America’s Golden Age.”...

'We are the dominant predator': GOP lawmaker justifies US right to take Greenland

GOP Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) told Fox Business Network Tuesday that the U.S. has the right to "acquire" Greenland because, "We are, quite frankly, the dominant predator."

President Donald Trump has long talked about annexing Greenland for the purpose of national security. According to Reuters, "Greenland's strategic location and resources could benefit the U.S." because "it lies along the shortest route from Europe to North America, vital for the U.S. ballistic missile warning system."

Ogles was asked about his recently introduced bill giving Trump "Congressional authority" to acquire the Danish territory....

Boebert, MTG and far-right friends derail Speaker Mike Johnson’s summer plans

WASHINGTON — U.S. House Republicans have all but given up on governing this year.

So they’re off to go campaign the rest of the summer despite — in the recent estimation of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump — the nation being mired in “crisis” and “decline” over issues squarely in Congress’ purview, ranging from immigration to inflation to international relations.

After Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and other Republican leaders embarrassingly had to pull four funding bills from the House floor this summer over internal party disagreements, this week GOP leaders just decided to pull the plug on legislating and start their summer recess early. ...

GOP rep suggests delaying August recess because 'we need to impeach the vice president'

GOP rep suggests delaying August recess because 'we need to impeach the vice president'

Vice President Kamala Harris is continuing to rapidly consolidate support for her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, with President Joe Biden's blessing. Now, Republicans in Congress are hoping to throw a wrench in the works.

Politico reporter Olivia Beavers recently tweeted that Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tennessee) has already introduced articles of impeachment against Harris for "high crimes and misdemeanors." One article is for alleged "willful refusal to uphold the immigration laws," and another is for "breach of public trust."

When Beavers asked Ogles about the impending August recess when lawmakers are scheduled to be out of town for the next month, the Tennessee Republican pushed back, saying: "I have a problem with that. I think we have Appropriations bills to address and we need to impeach the vice president."...

'Never heard anything so ridiculous': Rep. mocked over effort to impeach Harris

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) introduced articles of impeachment against Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday, following a House GOP caucus meeting in which members frantically strategized over how to stop momentum for Harris' newly kicked-off presidential campaign.

The impeachment articles proclaim that Harris has committed high crimes and misdemeanors through "incompetence" in her role as "border czar" (a position she has never actually had) and then proceeded to cite several anecdotes of women killed by unauthorized migrants, as well as the fact that over 50 million fentanyl pills were seized by DEA in 2022 (even though seizures indicate the law is being enforced, and even though most of it is seized during border crossings at checkpoints, often from U.S. citizens.)

Nowhere in the resolution does it list a purported act of misconduct or abuse of power by Harris — something that was noticed by commenters on social media who roundly ridiculed the measure....
