Plans for Petco Park rodeo draws animal rights complaints from San Diego Democrats

SAN DIEGO — A three-day rodeo scheduled for Petco Park in January is prompting complaints about animal cruelty from the county Democratic Party and animal rights advocates. They are lobbying San Diego officials and the Padres to cancel the event, which would be the first rodeo ever at Petco and the first within the city since one at the sports arena in the 1980s. If the event isn't canceled, critics want the City Council to approve an ordinance banning the use of animal torture devices during rodeos. The Padres said in a statement that the team has been assured by the group running the rodeo t......

Lolita, the Seaquarium orca, died Friday as hopes grew she would leave for the sea

MIAMI — Lolita, the orca that was a star attraction in captivity at the Seaquarium, died Friday as plans to move her out of the Miami theme park were beginning to take shape. She was believed to be 57 at the time of her death. Now known as Toki, a name adopted by advocates urging her freedom, the killer whale had suffered health problems in her Seaquarium tank last fall and was reportedly close to death because of pneumonia, according to recent interviews with her training staff. In a social media post, the Seaquarium said Lolita developed a renal condition in recent days. “Toki was an inspira......

NYC carriage horse euthanized 2 months after collapsing on street

NEW YORK — A New York City carriage horse was euthanized two months after his caught-on-video collapse on a Manhattan street sparked outrage from animal rights advocates, according to the farm where it had been relocated. The horse, named Ryder, fell to the asphalt on Ninth Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen on Aug. 10 in front of crowds of bystanders, video shows. Ryder’s carriage driver was seen whipping the horse and yelling for him to get up before police and veterinarians arrived to cart the horse away. Ryder “was recently humanely euthanized due to his medical condition and age,” said a statement ......

Following the collapse of NYC carriage horse, a witness, councilman and animal rights activists call on DA to probe industry

NEW YORK — Animal rights activists and City Councilman Bob Holden are demanding that the Manhattan D.A. launch a criminal investigation into the carriage horse industry after a horse collapsed last week in Hell’s Kitchen. One activist said that the collapse of the horse, Ryder, wasn’t a “spontaneous tragedy with any warnings,” but an incident that could have been easily avoided had Ryder not been mistreated and malnourished. “Timestamped photos and eyewitness accounts show that this horse was in distress far before he collapsed onto the pavement in Manhattan traffic,” said Edita Birnkrant, exe......

Doc Antle from ‘Tiger King’ arrested in South Carolina

Bhagavan “Doc” Antle, an eccentric big animal-lover featured in “Tiger King,” has been arrested and jailed in South Carolina. It is not yet clear why 62-year-old Antle was taken into custody. He was arrested by the FBI on Friday around 3:30 p.m. and booked into the Horry County jail later the same night. No charges were listed on the county’s online booking records. The zookeeper’s recent arrest is far from his first tangle with law enforcement. He is currently facing several misdemeanor and felony wildlife trafficking and animal cruelty charges in Virginia. A trial on those charges is slated ......

Animal rescues overwhelmed as families return their pandemic pups en masse

PHILADELPHIA — The frustration jumped off the Instagram page: "I have never ever seen this many people trying to dump their dogs," posted Jessica Mellen-Graaf of the Philly Bully Team dog rescue. Already swamped, her rescue team had received 20 requests in 48 hours from owners who wanted to give up their dogs. "We knew this could happen," she said. "I just don't think we thought it was going to be this bad." In the early months of COVID-19, the near-emptying of the nation's animal shelters was one of the few bright spots in a dark time. ASPCA data suggest over 23 million American households ac......
