Judge Engoron won't recuse self from Trump case — despite being 'accosted' by lawyer

New York Judge Arthur Engoron is making clear this week that he has no intention of stepping back from former President Donald Trump's civil fraud trial, CNN reported.

Engoron already found Trump liable in the case and ordered him to pay over $450 million for systematically lying about his businesses' property valuations to manipulate his tax liability and loan terms. Trump is moving to appeal that decision, and in the meantime, his lawyers have demanded Engoron step back from the case — which he refused to do.

In an order put out Thursday, Engoron stated that “I am supremely confident in my ability to continue to serve, as I always have, impartially,” and that it would cause "immense prejudice" if he were to recuse himself....

Trump's rant at end of trial could doom his appeal in fraud case: report

Donald Trump put his New York real estate empire in jeopardy when he broke into a 5-minute rant in the middle of his $370 million civil fraud trial, legal experts told the Messenger Friday.

That’s because, according to Columbia University Law Professor John Coffee, the case is most like headed to an appellate court that will likely be less than pleased with his closing argument antics.

“If you keep saying everything in New York is a travesty, even though it's been done under the supervision of the appellate division, ” Coffee told the Messenger. “I don't think you make them happy.”...

'Stick with the no': Legal expert gives Justice Engoron advice on handling Trump

After initially denying him the right to give a personal speech during closing arguments at his civil fraud trial in New York, Justice Arthur Engoron relented at the last minute and let him speak — only to have to cut him off after a few minutes as he veered into attacks on the court.

It may have been a mistake on Engoron's part, suggested legal analyst Lisa Rubin on MSNBC Thursday; instead, she argued, he should have stuck to his guns.

"I have to say, when I saw that ... it's like what are we doing?" said anchor Chris Hayes. "It is really, there's a bomb threat at the guy's house. He's had his court staff members clerk, her life turned upside down, dragged, social media, email."...

Trump judge snaps as lawyer cites Melania's mother's death as reason for delay

A testy exchange between Donald Trump's attorney and the civil court judge overseeing his fraud trial began with Chris Kise using the former president's late mother-in-law as an excuse and ended with Engoron declaring "I WILL NOT GRANT ANY FURTHER EXTENSIONS."

Angry emails between Kise and Engoron were revealed Wednesday when the judge blocked Trump's unusual request to deliver his own closing arguments in his $370 million fraud trial, in which the former president denies wrongdoing.

Permission was denied after Trump's lawyers failed to agree by Jan. 9 that their client would limit himself to the facts of the case and not insult Engoron, his staff, New York Attorney General Letitia James, or the New York State court system. ...

Donald Trump claims ‘all experts’ agree he did nothing wrong in $370M fraud case

Does Donald Trump not get MSNBC?

The Former President said Monday morning that “all experts and analysts” agree that he did not commit the fraud for which Judge Arthur Engoron has already found him liable.

“Almost all experts and legal analysts have stated, for all to see, that the Litigation before Judge Engoron is a sham and disgrace, a dark time in New York Judicial history,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Monday. “I did nothing wrong.”...

Trump's demand to dismiss fraud trial denied in scathing ruling: report

Trump's demand to dismiss fraud trial denied in scathing ruling: report

Judge Arthur Engoron Monday relentlessly mocked Trump, his attorneys and his financial expert in a scathing rejection of the former president’s fifth dismissal request in his $250 million fraud case, according to a new report.

Engoron slammed accounting expert Eli Bartov, the NYU professor who was reportedly paid nearly $900,000 to testify that Trump’s financial records did not fraudulently inflate his worth, as is contended by New York Attorney General Letitia James, ABC News reports.

"Bartov is a tenured professor, but all that his testimony proves is that for a million or so dollars, some experts will say whatever you want them to say," Engoron reportedly wrote....
