Why members of Congress keep breaking financial laws over and over again

Throughout 2023, federal lawmakers kept introducing a steady stream of bills designed to stop congressional stock trading.

At the same time, their colleagues continued breaking existing financial disclosure and conflicts-of-interest laws.

Nothing has come of those bills yet, but Raw Story has identified at least 37 members of Congress this year who violated federal law by not properly disclosing their personal finances as required by the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 and the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act of 2012. ...

Florida congresswoman — a former DNC chair — is months late disclosing family stock sale. Again.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), the former chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, was seven months late disclosing a family stock sale, according to a federal financial document reviewed by Raw Story.

Wasserman Schultz’s July 11 disclosure detailed an October 2022 sale of Adams Resources and Energy Inc. stock on behalf of a dependent child and valued at between $1,001 and $15,000.

The Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act — passed in 2012 to stop insider trading, curb conflicts-of-interest and enhance transparency — requires prompt reporting within 45 days of most purchases, sales and exchanges of stocks, bonds, commodity futures and cryptocurrency by key government officials, particularly members of Congress....

Pelosi reports tech stock purchases worth up to $1.5M amid 'crisis of confidence and trust' in Congress

As numerous members of Congress call for a ban on lawmakers and their spouses trading stocks, House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi's household just made a massive purchase in tech stocks.

Pelosi (D-CA) disclosed on Thursday that her husband, Paul Pelosi, purchased up to $1 million in Microsoft stock and up to $500,000 in Apple stock by exercising stock options, according to federal financial documents reviewed by Raw Story.

Earlier this month, Pelosi disclosed that her husband sold off between $500,000 and $1 million worth of Apple stock to make a contribution to her alma mater, Trinity College....

‘Aren’t we a little more grown up than that?’: Ex-lawmaker rips Congress for ‘dog ate my homework’ excuses

Members of Congress keep messing up — over and over and over again — in failing to abide by an 11-year-old financial disclosure and conflicts-of-interest law.

And the habitual lack of compliance with the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act — dozens of lawmakers have violated its disclosure provisions during the past three years, often offering tortured excuses — is eroding the public’s trust, one of the law’s original authors tells Raw Story.

“I mean, come on. ‘The dog ate my homework,’ aren’t we a little more grown up than that?” said former Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA). “If we're capable of voting on whether or not to raise or lower taxes or send people to war, I think we can report when we make an investment.”...
