After fraud ruling, what becomes of Donald Trump’s N.Y. real estate business?

NEW YORK — Donald Trump may be forced to fork over a fortune under an order in his civil fraud case issued Friday, but it does not look like he will be losing his ritzy New York real estate holdings any time soon, legal experts said. The decision from Justice Arthur Engoron in the long-running Manhattan Supreme Court case clarified the question after the judge issued a much-analyzed ruling in September that seemed to signal Trump might have to give up control of coveted properties. The September ruling essentially ordered Trump and his family to relinquish their businesses in New York after En......

Uber and Lyft drivers plan airport strikes on Valentine’s Day

Drivers for Uber and Lyft are planning a one-day airport strike in 10 cities on Valentine’s Day, including Chicago, New York, Newark, Tampa and Orlando, to once again call attention to demands for better wages, better safety practices and job protection. The Justice for App Workers coalition, which represents over 30,000 ride-share and delivery drivers across Illinois, is leading the local effort by calling for Chicago Uber and Lyft drivers to rally at O’Hare International Airport Wednesday at 11 a.m., according to a news release from the coalition. The one-day strike means drivers would refus......

Train carrying over 100 tons of coal derails, spills into Northern California’s Feather River

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Union Pacific train carrying 118 tons of coal derailed Sunday due to a track defect and dumped its contents into and around Plumas County’s Feather River, according to railroad officials and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Fifteen rail cars chugging west on tracks parallel to the Middle Fork Feather River in Blairsden derailed, spilling the fuel into the river. At least 14 rail cars tipped over or sustained damage, Fish and Wildlife officials said. At least one rail car fell into the water. “Several cars lost the total payload and some cars partially rele......

Former transportation official pleads guilty to offering bribe to Illinois senator

CHICAGO — A longtime Chicago political operative pleaded guilty Friday to a scheme to bribe then-state Sen. Martin Sandoval on behalf of a suburban construction company that needed state approval for a development in East Dundee. William Helm, the onetime deputy commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation and a former state transportation official, also admitted in a plea agreement with prosecutors that he and others helped arrange $40,000 in bribes to other, unnamed officials. He also pleaded guilty to a tax count showing he vastly underreported his income over a five-year period, cost......

Anheuser-Busch stock climbs after Trump endorses Bud Light. ‘Not a Woke company’

ST. LOUIS — Anheuser-Busch InBev stock prices are inching closer to what they were last year before sales tanked, thanks at least in part to a recent endorsement by former President Donald Trump. Trump praised the company on social media on Tuesday, helping push Anheuser-Busch stock prices up about $2, or almost 3%, that day. And they have continued to increase, closing at $65.61 on Thursday, close to last year’s high of $67.09 a share. Still, experts say it is too early to tell if Trump’s seal of approval will impact beer sales. “It will be interesting to see if there is any improvement,” Dav......
Why did Sacramento take this woman’s family photos and childhood Bible in a homeless sweep?

Why did Sacramento take this woman’s family photos and childhood Bible in a homeless sweep?

Nicole Casper, whose RV was towed without warning by the city of Sacramento with almost everything she owned still inside it, retrieved some of her possessions from the impound lot Tuesday — but had her access cut off before she retrieved the suitcase in which she frantically had packed her family photos and her childhood Bible. Her Winnebago was set to be demolished two days later, and she walked onto the lot the same day that Chima’s Tow employees were set to begin throwing her property in the garbage. Iran Chima of Chima’s Tow previously told her that, because all of her property was being ......
