OnePulse quietly sells land next to nightclub property to private buyer

As it moves toward its own liquidation, the onePulse Foundation has quietly sold two parcels of land next to the Pulse nightclub property that were once key to its planned memorial to the 2016 mass shooting, the Orlando Sentinel has learned. The price was $1 million. The property sale, recorded on Monday, is among the final chapters for onePulse, which struggled to move forward with the memorial over the last seven years and has now ceded leadership to the city of Orlando. The city purchased the nightclub land itself two months ago. Mayor Buddy Dyer announced his intention to complete a perman......

Steppenwolf Theatre announces major layoffs: ‘We’re not too big to fail’

CHICAGO — Steppenwolf Theatre Company, one of Chicago’s most storied arts institutions and long a crucial part of the city’s identity, said Thursday that it was laying off 12% of its staff, effectively immediately. Another case of HIV linked to vampire facial offered at New Mexico medical spa

Former clients of a medical spa in New Mexico have been urged to to get tested for blood-borne infections after another case of the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, was linked to a vampire facial treatment offered at the now-shuttered business. The VIP Beauty Salon and Spa in Albuquerque was forced to close its doors in September 2018 after at least two clients tested positive for HIV following the facials, in which a patient’s blood is drawn and then components of the blood — specifically the platelet-rich plasma — are injected back into the face using microneedles. In March, another for......

Boy Scouts selling off storied camps under pressure from sex abuse claims, bankruptcy — and locals are worried

PHILADELPHIA — Camp Trexler drapes across 755 sylvan acres in the Poconos where, for a century, Boy Scouts have enjoyed swimming, making campfires and hiking. But the forested land, complete with lake, is expected to soon go up for sale with zoning that could transform it into a housing development amid the rural hamlet of Jonas in Polk Township, Pennsylvania. The camp's owner, the Minsi Trails Council of the Boy Scouts, is one of 250 local councils across the United States under pressure to pay toward a $2.5 billion national sex abuse settlement that led to the organization's bankruptcy. Resi......

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey tweets apology after Elon Musk’s mass layoffs

Jack Dorsey issued an apology to Twitter employees past and present a day after its new owner, Elon Musk, fired half the social media company’s 7,500-member workforce. “Folks at Twitter past and present are strong and resilient,” the Twitter founder tweeted Saturday morning. “They will always find a way no matter how difficult the moment. I realize many are angry with me. I own the responsibility for why everyone is in this situation: I grew the company size too quickly. I apologize for that.” By June 30, 2013, shortly before the social media company went public, Twitter had approximately 2,00......
