'More competent at doing evil': Experts warn Trump admin quietly rewriting its next scheme

President Donald Trump and his administration have been secretly trying to manipulate the Census rules to exclude millions of immigrants and steal congressional seats, according to a new report from The Bulwark on Friday.

The Bulwark's economics editor Catherine Rampell cited a "vaguely ominous but little-noticed regulatory filing" in June that could target immigrants, business and the balance of power in the United States.

"The filing was a notification that the Trump administration had drafted new rules governing the decennial census," Rampell wrote....

California exodus: A record number of people are fleeing the Golden State for Florida

Texas has long been the top landing spot in the United States for residents leaving California. Nevada and Arizona, two states that share a border with California, have also traditionally been among the top destinations. There’s suddenly a new contender attracting people fleeing California: Ron DeSantis’s Florida. New data from the census bureau show that more people left California for Florida in 2022 than in any year going back to at least 2005. An estimated 50,701 people moved from California to Florida between 2021 and 2022, according to census figures, making Florida the third-most popula......

Between 2021 and 2022, roughly 818,000 California residents moved out of state, according to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The bureau’s data shows a net loss of roughly 342,000 people, slightly lower than the year before but still a major contributor to the state’s declining population. The data also shows a growing number of residents leaving from the Golden State to Arizona. Arizona was the seco......

From 2016 to 2021, nearly every state saw a spike in the number of young adults between the ages of 25 and 44 forming new households, a development with far-reaching implications for state populations, economic growth and infrastructure. For many millennials, the economic fallout of the Great Recession a decade and a half ago postponed what for many is a major milestone: leaving their parents’ house or housing shared with roommates to form their own household. But millennials began striking out on their own at a rapid clip starting about seven years ago, according to a new Stateline analysis o......

Most US Latinos are still Mexican, but these groups made major gains in the last 20 years

While Mexicans still make up the largest share of U.S. Latinos, the population has become increasingly diverse in the last 20 years, with the fastest growth coming from countries in South America. That’s according to a new report from the UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute. Researchers used U.S. Census data from 2000 and 2020 to examine demographic and socioeconomic changes among Latinos descending from 19 countries. In those 20 years, the nation’s Latino population grew from 35 million to more than 62 million. In particular, some Latino origin groups grew at faster rates than others. T......

No more gender pay gap? Young women earn more than men in Sacramento. Here’s why

The Sacramento, California region is one of the few places in the country where women under 30 earn more money than men, bucking the gender wage gap trend that remains pervasive across the United States. Nationwide, women still earn less than men on average, according to a recent report from Pew Research. Among full-time, year-round workers in 2019, women’s median annual earnings were 82% those of men. And in California, full-time female workers earned 87.6% of what full-time male workers earned in 2020. But in Sacramento metro area, the median salary for young women is actually about 101% of ......
