U.S. Supreme Court won’t review Indiana school’s trans bathroom case

The U.S. Supreme Court handed a surprising victory to transgender youth Tuesday after declining to review an appeal from a central Indiana public school district over bathroom rights for trans students. By refusing to take up the case, the nation’s top court left in place a lower court ruling requiring the district to treat transgender students equally. The case involves a trans teen, identified in court papers as A.C., who attended a middle school in Martinsville, about 30 miles southwest of Indianapolis. The 2021 lawsuit — filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana on behalf of A......

Sacramento County pays settlement to man allegedly kicked by deputies for not showing ID

Sacramento County has paid a $45,000 settlement to a man who alleged he was kicked by deputies after declining to show them his driver’s license. Nathan Schneider was working as a Lyft driver in July 2019 at around 9:30 p.m., driving a couple back and forth from an Orangevale storage unit facility, alleged a federal lawsuit Schneider filed in April 2020. After one of the drop offs, Schneider encountered an issue getting through the gate to exit and was trapped inside. He called the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office for help, the lawsuit alleged. Shortly after, Sheriff’s deputies Johsua Hartin and Jo......

Black newspaper carrier, sheriff reach settlement in 2021 confrontation

Pierce County has agreed to pay more than $500,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by a Black newspaper carrier over a controversial 2021 confrontation with Sheriff Ed Troyer. The settlement, filed in U.S. District Court for Western Washington, ends the long-running federal lawsuit filed by Sedrick Altheimer, who was detained and frisked after Troyer triggered a massive police response on Jan. 27, 2021, by calling an emergency dispatcher and repeatedly stating that Altheimer was threatening to kill him. Troyer, who is white, walked back the threat claims when questioned by a Tacoma police officer,......

Oxford school shooting victim's family sues Michigan State Police in latest legal challenge

DETROIT — Michigan State Police officials failed to aggressively intervene and prevent the Oxford High School mass shooting, according to a lawsuit filed by the family of a slain student. That alleged failure included neglecting to make a timely risk assessment and intervene after receiving tips about threats and disturbing behavior by high school students, including Ethan Crumbley, the Oxford High student who would go on to kill four classmates at the school in November 2021 and injure seven others. The allegation emerged in a lawsuit filed Monday in the Michigan Court of Claims by Steve St. ......

Woman sues Disney World, claims severe ‘wedgie’ injury on Typhoon Lagoon slide

A woman has sued Disney, claiming that a trip down a waterslide at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon four years ago caused an “injurious wedgie” that left her with severe gynecological trauma. In a lawsuit filed last week in Orange County Circuit Court, Emma and Edward McGuinness said they were seeking at least $50,000 in damages from Walt Disney World stemming from what happened on the Humunga Kowabunga slide in October 2019. The lawsuit, filed by attorney Alan Wagner of Tampa, claims that Emma McGuinness suffered the injuries when she slid down the 214-foot-high, five-story slide while on a visit with......

Disney fires back that it should be declared winner in Florida lawsuit

Disney asked a judge Friday to declare it the winner in the ongoing legal battle with the tourism oversight board handpicked by Gov. Ron DeSantis to run the company’s development interests in Central Florida. Disney filed a motion in Orange County Circuit Court on Friday objecting to Tuesday’s motion by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District seeking to declare it the victor in the lawsuit. In the suit, the state wants development agreements limiting the board’s authority over Disney’s future development to be made null and void. But Disney argued that doing that would violate its First......
