Tony Allen sentenced to community service instead of jail time for NBA health insurance fraud

NEW YORK — Ex-NBA player Tony Allen was sentenced Tuesday to community service and three years of probation for his role in a health insurance scheme. Allen, 41, was one of 18 former players named in an October 2021 federal indictment that charged the ex-hoopers with defrauding the league’s health insurance plan. Allen’s wife, Desiree, was also named. In April, Allen pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and wire fraud. He faced the potential for significant jail time in the case. Scheme leader Terrence Williams was sentenced to 10 years in prison. “I fully acknowledge my ind......

Covered California to lower patient costs after Democratic lawmakers win funding from Newsom

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Weeks after Democratic lawmakers forced Gov. Gavin Newsom to make good on a four-year-old pledge to use tax penalty proceeds from fining the uninsured to increase health insurance subsidies for low- and middle-income Californians, Covered California officials announced they will funnel that money into reducing out-of-pocket spending for many enrollees struggling with the cost of care. The state’s health insurance exchange will zero out some patients’ hospital deductibles, up to $5,400; lower the copay of primary care visits from $50 to $35; and reduce the cost for generic ......

Illinois governor signs bills giving state power over health insurance prices, Affordable Care Act exchange

Illinois will soon run its own Affordable Care Act health insurance marketplace, and have the power to stop sky-high price increases of plans sold on it. Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a pair of bills Tuesday aimed at giving Illinois more control over health insurance prices and the Affordable Care Act marketplace, also known as the Obamacare exchange, where people can buy individual and family health insurance plans. The bill signings Tuesday came amid criticism aimed at Pritzker for his decision to close enrollment for many people in a separate health care program for immigrants in the country wi......

San Diego Roman Catholic diocese facing yet another lawsuit — now from its own insurance company

SAN DIEGO — The insurance carrier for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego filed a lawsuit Friday contending that because the diocese violated the terms of its insurance policies, the company should not have to pay out any money to settle claims from hundreds of people alleging they were victims of sexual abuse by clergy over the past several decades. The lawsuit was filed in San Diego federal court by Catholic Mutual Relief Society of America, the insurance provider for San Diego and other Catholic dioceses. The company wants a judge to order that it has no duty to "defend or indemnify" th......

Hurricane Ian: Damage will drive insurance rates even higher, cripple industry

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — With early predictions of $50 billion in damage from Hurricane Ian, experts worry whether the state’s struggling property insurance system will become another casualty of the storm and lead to even higher premiums. If it fails, the cost will be passed on to all Florida homeowners, not just those who suffered damage, because of assessments levied on them to cover the losses. “We’re relying on a strategy of hope, and that hasn’t played out,” State Sen. Jeff Brandes, a Republican from Pinellas County who has tried to push for strict insurance and litigation reforms to rein in t......

Can California keep offering cheap health care? Here’s what state network’s new CEO says

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jessica Altman took over in March as chief executive officer of Covered California, and even as she was settling into a new home in Sacramento she also was making the rounds with congressional leaders to drive home just how much Californians want access to health insurance. The greatest barrier to getting it is all too often the cost, Altman said in her first interview with The Sacramento Bee, and nothing underscored that more than the record enrollment Covered California saw last year when new federal assistance in the American Rescue Plan slashed premiums for California ......
