'It's time': Worker empowerment fuels high rates of labor action

DETROIT — Low unemployment, high rates of inflation and lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have contributed to a boom in union and strike activity in the past couple of years. And after a summer full of strikes, this fall could be no different. More than 100 strikes took place from June through August across the United States, according to the Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relation's labor action tracker — nearly as many as last year's 116 and significantly more than 2021's 64 in that same time period. Workers feel empowered, according to experts. Confidence in knowing they ca......

Inside the UAW's confrontational new political strategy

WASHINGTON — It’s a new political era for the United Auto Workers — one that involves demanding results, withholding endorsements and publicly criticizing some of the politicians who say they’re the union’s biggest allies. That’s because, in the words of the union’s new leadership, they are in a “defining moment” for the future of work in the automotive industry. The time for niceties is over. Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it made $3.7 billion in net income in the first six months of the year, up from a loss of $2.4 billion in 2022. That included $1.9 billion in net income in the second quarter, nearly triple the results from the April-to-June quarter last year. As a result, the Dearborn, Michigan, automaker increased its full-year guidance by $2 billion in adjusted operating income, b......

What you need to know about the SAG-AFTRA strike that will upend Hollywood

NEW YORK — Lights, camera, pause. Hollywood is officially on hiatus as the union representing on-screen talent has joined screenwriters in striking against the studios, amid stalled contract negotiations. SAG-AFTRA officially announced its strike would commence at midnight PST Friday, after the union’s contract expired late Wednesday and negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) fell apart. Union leadership noted that while the strike was “an instrument of last resort,” settling for an unfair deal wouldn’t just “destroy each of us, but the industry at la......

Labor board to review case filed by CVS worker who said she was fired for refusing union membership

The National Labor Relations Board is scheduled to review a complaint filed by a 68-year-old part-time employee of an Evanston, Illinois, pharmacy who said she was fired for refusing to join a union. Lynn Gray, who began working at the Evanston CVS Pharmacy in Oct. 2022, filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board after she said she was fired Dec. 15 for failing to join Local United Food and Commercial Workers 881 Union. She has since been reinstated and a meeting to begin reviewing the complaint with the National Labor Relations Board is scheduled for Jan. 11. According to Gray,......
