‘I'm totally stunned’: GOP senator turns on own party over 'bizarre' fixation

WASHINGTON — Senate Republican leaders are rushing to pass President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act before their July Fourth recess, but rank-and-file Republicans from both sides of the party are tapping the brakes on the effort.

While conservative hardliners continue calling for steeper spending cuts, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), a far-right conservative himself, has become one of the loudest voices of opposition to proposed changes to how states pay for Medicaid.

“I don't get it. I don't get why we would punish working people and rural hospitals, and I don't know. I don't understand. It's broken,” Hawley told Raw Story about his party's fixation on slashing care relied on by millions. “I think it's bizarre.”...

'Act of self-deception': Trump faces crisis as GOP rebels vow to dig in heels

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson need to back off — or so argue many Senate Republicans set on overhauling the House-passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which would turn much of Trump's campaign rhetoric into law.

After the measure squeaked out of the House by a single vote ahead of the Memorial Day recess, GOP leaders and the president are pressuring Senate Republicans to pass the bill, complete with tax and spending cuts, by July 4.

“Do you think the current timeline is unrealistic?” Raw Story asked Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) at the Capitol. ...

'It will never end': Dem condemns House speaker's desire for 'conditions' on CA fire aid

Florida Democrat Rep. Jared Moskowitz called out House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-LA) assertion that he wants "conditions" put on federal aid to the blue state of California.

Johnson told CNN's Manu Raju on Monday, "Obviously, there's been water resource mismanagement, forest management mistakes, all sorts of problems. And it does come down to leadership. And it appears to us that state and local leaders were derelict in their duty in many respects, so that's something that has to be factored in."

Johnson added, "I think there should probably be conditions on that aid. That's my personal view, we'll see what the consensus is."...

Why both parties must make the 'painful' decision to 'eliminate the debt ceiling': NYT editorial board

It has been over a month since President Joe Biden and House Republican lawmakers finally struck a deal — after weeks of discussion — to lift the debt ceiling for two more years in order to avoid a default.

In a New York Times op-ed published Wednesday, the Times' editorial board writes, although a deal has been made, it is not one that will prove to be fiscally sustainable for the country.

The board insists lawmakers must make "painful choices," one of which would be to eliminate the debt ceiling all together, and the other would be to compromise....

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s move to the mainstream baffles her MAGA-land constituents: report

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has in recent months moved to the mainstream, and some of the conservative firebrand’s constituents don’t like it, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Greene earlier this year joined House moderates in backing Kevin McCarthy (R-Ca.) for the speakership, and last week bucked her ultra-conservative Freedom Caucus colleagues by supporting the debt ceiling deal.

The AJC’s Patricia Murphy writes that, “The word right now is that the base is confused,” said one Georgia GOP insider. “They’re shaking their heads saying, ‘I don’t know what to do with this.’ They’re hurt.”...

Lauren Boebert lashes out at 'garbage' debt deal and explains why she skipped vote

U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R) on Saturday said in a rant on Twitter that she was "ticked off" by the fact that she wasn't able to participate in the debt ceiling deal negotiations, and clarified that her no-show for the vote was actually a "protest."

Boebert, who has been consistently in opposition to the bill, skipped out on the vote after standing shoulder to shoulder with House Freedom Caucus members to decry the debt ceiling deal as a disaster for the country. In a tweet on Saturday, she explained her actions to all her followers.

"Hey, everyone, I'm back in Colorado, but let's talk about D.C.," Boebert begins. "No excuses, I was ticked off they wouldn't let me do my job, so I didn't take the vote." ...
