Mockery after Trump Education Department 'dweebs' hit with brutal community note

The Department of Education tried to compare President Donald Trump to a tiger, only for community notes to clarify it compared him to Adolf Hitler.

On Wednesday, the Education Department posted a clip from the film "Darkest Hour," which is about British Prime Minister Winston Churchill facing a threat from Nazi Germany.

The clip featured Churchill, portrayed by Gary Oldman, shouting, "You cannot reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth." It then cuts to a montage of Trump smiling and waving, suggesting that he's the "tiger."...

Trump team blames 'coding errors' for 'profoundly cruel' hit to teachers, nurses: report

President Donald Trump's Education department is yanking credits for thousands of student loan borrowers and claiming "coding errors" are to blame, according to a new report.

The Trump administration is rolling back credits given to teachers, nurses, and nonprofit workers who might see the remainder of their student debt forgiven if they stay on top of their payments and meet other criteria, Politico reported Sunday.

"Playing games with people's payment counts is profoundly cruel," Julia Barnard, the former student loan ombudsman for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, told Politico. The Education Department should "hold borrowers harmless for errors they had nothing to do with."...

White House clashes with defiant cabinet member over Trump's massive cuts: report

A Trump cabinet secretary is breaking from the White House on proposed budget cuts, according to reporting by the New York Times.

"The White House is asking Congress to cut the number of lawyers enforcing civil rights in schools," the Times reported on Friday. "Education Secretary Linda McMahon has told Congress she wants money to hire more."

McMahon told House lawmakers last week that the proposed cuts are a "floor for hiring," the report noted. Two anonymous White House officials said McMahon is contradicting their position by framing the proposed cuts as a starting point for negotiations. ...

'Devastating results': Health expert slams Trump admin over 'sharpest threat' in decades

A health expert has called out the Trump administration over what he calls the "sharpest threat" in decades.

The U.S. Department of Education has claimed it will redefine what it considers a "professional degree," claiming it's tied to an attempt to reduce costs. The department has planned to recategorize nursing, public health, social work, physician assistant studies, audiology and physical therapy as "nonprofessional."

But the move could have lasting repercussions on everyday Americans and the people working towards these roles in health care — disproportionately hurting women and people of color, Thoai D Ngo, chair and professor of the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, wrote in an opinion piece for Newsweek published Friday....

Trump's education sec'y mocked after 'basic math' flub during House grilling

Education secretary Linda McMahon was roundly mocked on social media after flubbing "basic math" while testifying Tuesday morning before the Senate Appropriations Committee on the department’s fiscal 2026 budget request.

According to The Hill, "The request by the Trump administration...includes major cuts to federal education and research programs, putting a focus on state and local education systems. It also includes a boost in charter school grants."

Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) took a moment out of the hearing to explain to McMahon the difference between "billion" and "trillion."...

'Trying to railroad me!' Superintendent gets testy as CNN host says 'you've had issues'

Ryan Walters, the Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction, celebrated the Trump administration's dismantling of the Department of Education on Thursday before claiming he was being railroaded by CNN when asked about his state's performance record.

Walters, who recently pushed to have the Bible in every Oklahoma classroom, argued, "Parents know what's best for their kids, not bureaucrats. And what you're going to continue to see are states empowering families with this new freedom given to them by the Trump administration."

CNN anchor Brianna Keilar reminded him that parents have a great deal of power in public schools before discussing how key metrics have shown a drop in math and reading skills for fourth graders in his state. ...
