Ex-ICE official aghast as Trump officials hatch ‘prison ships’ plot for immigrants: NYT

The Trump administration is weighing a costly new immigration enforcement tool that a former official warns “raises serious concerns at every step.”

Officials have held early talks about loading migrants onto ships, including ferries and a 500-foot former training vessel, and sailing them to Central and South America, The New York Times reported Thursday, citing two U.S. officials.

The trips could stretch for days and cost millions of dollars apiece, far more than the deportation flights the government already relies on....

Alarm as Trump's secretive court claims its first victim: 'It defies logic'

An Afghan woman is the first person ever deported through a long-dormant terrorism court that Trump's Justice Department revived.

Axios reported on Friday that the Justice Department announced the removal of Nazira Haji Zada. She was a lawful permanent resident and the subject of the first-ever case before the federal Alien Terrorist Removal Court. The win could give the administration a path to remove people it links to terrorism while keeping much of its evidence secret, Axios noted.

The government accused Zada of helping her son and son-in-law with a foiled 2024 shooting plot. Chief Judge Joan Ericksen directed her removal in a recently unsealed order dated August 20. The DOJ said it used classified information to establish that Zada is an "alien terrorist." Prosecutors said Zada accepted that designation and waived her right to appeal, according to Axios....

Trump 'mega' hearings punish people who don't even know they've been to court: report

President Donald Trump's administration has been using a "mega master" calendar to target people who don't know their case has been taken to court, according to a new report.

According to reporting by The Guardian, the Trump administration is ordering immigrants removed from the U.S. without them being physically present to find out about it. Immigrants are being scheduled for "mass hearings" at the last minute, where they are receiving removal orders by default.

"There's people that are walking around, going about their business, without realizing that they have a removal order on their record," Katie Fleming, the director of public education and engagement at the Acacia Center for Justice, told The Guardian....

Judge blocks ICE's bid to quickly deport witnesses of fatal Houston shooting

Judge blocks ICE's bid to quickly deport witnesses of fatal Houston shooting

A federal judge blocked Immigration and Customs Enforcement's attempt to hastily deport witnesses of a fatal shooting in Houston, according to reports Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge Keith Ellison issued an order on Monday blocking the deportation of Jose Trinidad Rojas Pliego and ordered ICE agents to keep him in the Southern District of Texas, CBS News reported. Pliego was a witness in the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican immigrant killed by ICE agents earlier this month.

Salgado Araujo was fatally shot after ICE agents rammed his van, according to witnesses. Agents didn't have body cameras on, and little video footage captured the events leading up to his death. However, Salgado Araujo was transporting three men in his van when he was killed, and their attorneys have denied ICE's account of events....

Trump DOJ's defiance backfires as judges move to revive contempt case: legal expert

Trump DOJ's defiance backfires as judges move to revive contempt case: legal expert

The Trump administration's defiance of federal judges is starting to backfire as a contempt case is revived, according to a legal expert.

Former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance wrote in a Tuesday piece for her Civil Discourse Substack about a long-running fight over the March 2025 deportation of Venezuelan men to El Salvador's CECOT prison.

Chief U.S. District Judge James Boasberg ordered the planes carrying the Venezuelan men to turn back and return the men, but the Trump administration landed the planes and handed the men over anyway, Vance recounted....

Trump expands deportation dragnet to snare new group of legal permanent residents

The Trump administration is going after a group of legal permanent residents in the United States, according a new report.

The Department of Homeland Security is looking to deport more than 50 green card holders, The New York Times reported. The agency has a "new unit dedicated to revetting thousands of immigrants with permanent residency across the country," and the group is looking into revoking green cards, according to data obtained by The Times.

"The creation of the unit also underscores how aggressively administrations are trying to root out immigrants they believe should be stripped of their legal status and removed from the country," The Times reported. "It is the latest sign that the administration is broadening its immigration crackdown beyond those living in the country illegally to those who have gained lawful status."...
