Senate Republican committed 'political malpractice' on CBS' Face the Nation: conservative

Senate Republican committed 'political malpractice' on CBS' Face the Nation: conservative

A conservative economic expert warned Monday that a Republican lawmaker worth millions had made a mistake after a CBS interview.

Jessica Riedl, a fellow at the Brookings Institution and budget policy expert who has worked on four different presidential campaigns, described why Sen. John Kennedy's (R-LA) message on "Face the Nation" could backfire for the Republican Party with midterms looming.

"Americans aren't even willing to pay for causes they believe in and that directly benefit them (trust me, I'm a federal budget expert)," Riedl wrote on X. "Telling them to pay significantly for causes that most don't even care about (and right before an election!) is political malpractice."...

Trump made 'profound miscalculation' that will harm rest of his presidency: analysis

Donald Trump's administration is still struggling to fix a mistake made that will likely affect the rest of the presidency, a political analyst has claimed.

While the president's team launched strikes on Iran last month, the financial consequences of the war could unravel Trump in the latter half of his presidency. Analysis from Brahma Chellaney in The Hill noted that Trump had grossly underestimated the war in Iran and the consequences of strikes carried out in March.

Chellaney wrote, "Trump’s advisers argued that any Iranian retaliation — whether through attacks on Gulf infrastructure or disruption of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz — could be offset by U.S. and allied production. Last June’s limited U.S. strikes on Iran had triggered only temporary price spikes, reinforcing the belief that markets could be managed."...

Trump scrambles experts to find energy alternative as Iran strike consequences take hold

Donald Trump has reportedly scrambled energy experts to find an alternative source of energy following the strikes on Iran.

While some experts believe a hold-up in the Strait of Hormuz supply line will be temporary, other insiders are concerned there could be longer-term consequences at play. Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman suggested the route, which has been used by the US and other Western nations as a supply line through the Persian Gulf, could be cut off for longer than the few days industry experts were predicting.

Ben Lefebvre, writing in Politico, noted two energy industry insiders had been asked by the president's team to find a solution - and fast....

Trump faces opposition from MAGA faithful over one admin energy choice

Trump faces opposition from MAGA faithful over one admin energy choice

MAGA voters could turn on Donald Trump should the administration ignore recent polling figures which point to a split between voters and politicians.

A recent poll carried out on GOP voters and self-identified MAGA members found the base are broadly in favor of green energy plans. The results of a First Solar poll suggest a coalition of MAGA and Trump voters are interested in pursuing the benefits of clean energy, as opposed to the oil industry Trump has included as part of his admin plans.

Ben German, writing in Axios, confirmed more than half of voters from the "GOP+" sample of Republicans, GOP-leaning independents, and Trump voters, would consider utilizing green energy. ...

'He has failed': Trump's war on clean power backfires as energy prices skyrocket

'He has failed': Trump's war on clean power backfires as energy prices skyrocket

President Donald Trump’s pledge to slash energy prices “by half within 12 months” has “failed” spectacularly, argued The New York Times’ editorial board in an op-ed Thursday, which blamed skyrocketing energy prices squarely on the president’s “war on solar and wind power.”

“Mr. Trump ran for president promising to reduce the cost of living and of energy prices in particular,” the op-ed reads. “He has failed so far.”

During Trump’s second term, electricity prices have surged at an unprecedented rate, increasing by 10% in the first half of 2025. The culprit, The New York Times argued, was largely supply constraints caused by the war in Ukraine and the astronomical energy demands of artificial intelligence data centers, the cost of the latter often subsidized by nearby communities....

Russia's Gazprom reports first annual loss in nearly 25 years

Russia state-controlled energy giant Gazprom was in the red last year for the first time in almost a quarter of a century after trade with Europe nosedived in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine. Gazprom reported on Thursday a net loss in 2023 of 629 billion roubles (around $6.9 billion), missing analyst estimates. Russian media outlets reported this was the first annual net loss at Gazprom since 1999. Following a profit of 1.23 trillion roubles in 2022, the first year of the full-scale war in Ukraine, Russian analysts had forecast a profit in 2023, too, albeit smaller. The current slump can b......
