Judge deals major blow to Trump's fight against blue city over local ICE ordinance

A federal judge rejected the Trump administration's lawsuit seeking to block a city law that limits cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Trump administration sued Boston to secure an injunction against one of the city's ordinances restricting ICE cooperation, the type of law that Trump says belongs to "sanctuary" cities. Federal Judge Leo Sorokin tossed the case on Thursday, ruling that the government has no standing to bring the case.

"The United States has not made a plausible showing that its alleged injuries are redressable by the judicial relief it seeks," Sorokin wrote. "A federal district court is not a roving beacon of justice, free to opine on each question any party presents, no matter how consequential." ...

'Did you say that?' GOP senator blindsides Trump nominee with blistering line of questions

Talking Points Memo writer Kate Riga reports a loyal ally of President Donald Trump appears to be turning on one of the president’s judicial nominees.

“Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), usually a fairly reliable Republican foot soldier, grilled a Trump judicial nominee Wednesday about his bigoted preachings,” Riga wrote Wednesday.

Trump nominated attorney Justin Olson to be a U.S. district judge for the Southern District of Indiana. But Olsen has been active in anti-trans litigation, leading a case to have transgender female athletes stripped of their NCAA awards. ...

'This is so rich': GOP senator slammed over 'shameful' social media celebration

Sen. Chuck Grassley's (R-IA) celebration of "National Whistleblower Day" drew massive condemnation on social media following the Emil Bove hearings in which the Iowa senator refused to allow three Department of Justice whistleblowers to testify.

In addition to the whistleblowers who accused Bove of encouraging attorneys under him to ignore court orders, more than 75 former federal and state judges and more than 900 former Department of Justice attorneys publicly called for lawmakers to block his nomination.

In the end, Bove was confirmed to a lifetime judgeship on Tuesday by just one vote....

GOP senator blames too many whistleblowers in bizarre defense of Trump's court pick

Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) delivered a bizarre defense Tuesday of President Donald Trump's nominee for a lifetime appointment to a federal judgeship, Emil Bove.

CNN host Kasie Hunt asked Kennedy if he believed Bove when the senior Justice Department official denied advising clients to defy a court order.

"I did," Kennedy answered. "I asked him about it in committee. I've said repeatedly in the Judiciary Committee in front of God and country that if you disagree with the federal judge's order, you don't have the right to ignore it. You can cuss it, you can discuss it, you can criticize it within the bounds of judicial and legal ethics, you can appeal it, but if your client tells you to ignore it, then you quit."...

'Trying to reinstate invasion!' MAGA whines as Trump dealt another court loss

MAGA adherents have taken to social media to proclaim that the federal judge who ruled against the Trump administration's attempts to stifle asylum-seekers should simply be ignored.

U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss ruled in favor of 13 individuals seeking asylum, as well as three immigrant rights groups that challenged Trump's executive order suspending U.S. asylum law.

"In his decision, Moss ruled that neither the Immigration and Nationality Act nor the Constitution give the president and administration officials 'the sweeping authority' asserted in his proclamation," CBS News reported....

Trump nominee wanted voting law with 'ugly history' of barring Blacks from polls

Trump nominee wanted voting law with 'ugly history' of barring Blacks from polls

A Donald Trump nominee for a lifetime federal judgeship to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Missouri has a history of promoting a policy designed to prevent Black people from voting, HuffPost revealed.

Attorney Josh Divine has served since 2023 as Missouri’s Solicitor General and Director of Special Litigation. "He previously clerked for conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and served as chief counsel to Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO)," according to the report.

As a student at the University of Northern Colorado in 2010, Divine wrote an opinion piece arguing that citizens "should be required to take literacy tests in order to vote — despite such tests being outlawed by the Voting Rights Act of 1965 because they were routinely used to keep Black people from voting," the report said....
