Judge slams brakes on Trump’s ‘unlawful’ plan to uproot thousands of federal workers

Judge slams brakes on Trump’s ‘unlawful’ plan to uproot thousands of federal workers

A federal judge has put a sweeping Trump administration plan to uproot thousands of government employees on ice, warning it likely flouts Congress's authority.

U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria of the Northern District of California on Tuesday blocked the Department of Agriculture from closing offices and forcing employees to relocate while a lawsuit brought by federal-worker unions plays out. In a 40-page order, Chhabria found it "overwhelmingly likely that USDA's planned closures and relocations violate Congress's express restrictions on those activities."

The reorganization, announced in summer 2025 after President Donald Trump ordered a "critical transformation" of the federal government, would force thousands of USDA workers to choose between moving far from home, often to another state, or losing their jobs, according to the ruling....

Trump's 'blatantly illegal' loyalty question for federal workers slapped down

Trump's 'blatantly illegal' loyalty question for federal workers slapped down

A federal judge on Friday blocked the Trump administration from requiring civil service job applicants to profess loyalty to the president.

U.S. District Judge George O'Toole issued the order Friday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts in Boston, siding with three unions that represent federal workers.

The ruling halts an Office of Personnel Management directive that told agencies to include an essay question asking applicants how they would advance President Donald Trump's executive orders and policy priorities, according to the unions that sued....

'We're being blindsided': Federal charity drive suffers historic losses under Trump

'We're being blindsided': Federal charity drive suffers historic losses under Trump

A federal charity drive is reportedly facing hardship due to Trump's actions.

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy issued Executive Order 10927, which authorized the U.S. Civil Service Commission to authorize nonprofit solicitations from employees of the federal government. Then, in 1982, 10927 was replaced when President Ronald Reagan signed Executive Order 12353 and established the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) — which would be overseen by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM).

The federal charity drive, according to Washington Post reporter Meryl Kornfield, has "raised more than $9 billion from federal government employees" over the years. But Kornfield, in an article published on Christmas Day 2025, reports that the program is "facing a steep decline in donations and other challenges just months after the Trump administration weighed canceling it altogether."...

'We're toast': Federal workers panic after 'life-altering' Supreme Court ruling

Federal employees are scrambling now that the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of President Donald Trump's desire to slash the government workforce.

Although it's currently on summer break, the Court lifted an order Tuesday blocking Trump from firing federal workers in nearly two dozen agencies, including the State Department and the Social Security Administration.

The Washington Post reported, "Litigation will continue as the layoffs proceed at 19 agencies, according to the ruling, which drew dissents from two liberal justices. It marks the latest upheaval in a chaotic half year of Trump-driven downsizings of federal departments, which spurred lawsuits and court-ordered halts — followed by still other court counterorders resuming the federal dismissals."...

'Curse words?' CNN host scolds senator over 'bad language' on social media

CNN's Brianna Keilar put Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) on the spot Wednesday over her word choice while posting on social media.

The scolding revolved around Smith's social media response to Elon Musk's infamous email to federal workers asking them to list five things they accomplished during the week.

"I want to say to people, there's a bad language-curse word-expletive alert here," Keilar began, before reading the post. ...

'You're hired': Democratic governors implement initiatives to lure fired federal workers

'You're hired': Democratic governors implement initiatives to lure fired federal workers

Federal workers fired by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency may find their professional futures lay in blue states where Democratic governors are rolling out the welcome mat, NBC News reported.

"In light of the thousands of federal job cuts doled out by President Donald Trump and billionaire adviser Elon Musk via the Department of Government Efficiency, a growing number of governors, mostly Democrats, have begun trying to woo those employees to apply for state government jobs. Others have promoted private sector opportunities and other resources available for those who are newly in the job market," wrote reporter Adam Edelman.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) dubbed the effort the "You're Hired" initiative. Her office put together a job board of open New York state positions, NBC reported, and she announced in a video, "The federal government might say, ‘You’re fired,’ but here in New York, we say, ‘You’re hired.' We love federal workers. Whatever your skills, we value public service.”...
