PORTSMOUTH, Virginia (Reuters) - Virginia repealed a one-per-month limit on handgun purchases on Tuesday, less than five years after a mentally-deranged student used handguns to massacre 32 people at Virginia Tech University in the worst single act of gun violence in U.S. history.

Lawmakers in Virginia approved Wednesday a watered-down version of a highly contested bill requiring women in the eastern US state to undergo an ultrasound prior to an abortion.

Supporters of the Virginia ultrasound bill may have lost a key ally Tuesday evening when Governor Bob McDonnell (R) withdrew his unconditional support for the controversial legislation, according to The Washington Post.
