'So very manly': Republicans caught on vacation amid shutdown scramble to post gun videos

Republicans on vacation amid the government shutdown were mocked Friday online for posting videos and photos of themselves shooting guns on their social media to apparently try to distract voters.

Rep. John James (R-MI) was reportedly vacationing in Turks and Caicos. TMZ caught wind of it and shared photos of the GOP lawmaker's getaway on Thursday — its most recent reporting on lawmakers fleeing the U.S. while government workers go unpaid.

In response, James posted a video of himself "unloading hand guns and assault rifles on targets and knocking out some pullups. Y'know? Super alpha male stuff," the outlet reported. ...

Trump DOJ’s big ‘antifa’ ICE case runs into trouble over shootout evidence

Trump DOJ’s big ‘antifa’ ICE case runs into trouble over shootout evidence

Defendants on trial in Texas in the Trump administration’s first “antifa” prosecution are claiming self-defense, in answer to attempted murder and terrorism charges stemming from a chaotic confrontation outside an ICE detention facility that culminated with the shooting of a local police officer.

After defense lawyers cross-examined Alvarado police Lt. Thomas Gross, who suffered minor injuries after allegedly being shot by one of the nine defendants, the government last Friday filed a motion in court in Fort Worth, seeking to bar defendants from making a self-defense claim.

The government argues that because any claim of self-defense or defense of others was “legally unsupportable,” introducing evidence or arguments that raise that defense would amount to “a thinly veiled attempt to encourage the jury to nullify any verdict in this case.”...

Minnesota gun rights group skewers Kash Patel for 'blatantly incorrect' firearm claim

Kash Patel on Sunday made a claim on Fox News that got extensive pushback from observers, including a Minnesota gun rights group, which found the FBI head's comment to be "blatantly incorrect."

Upon being pressed by an outwardly skeptical Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, Patel said, "You cannot bring a firearm, loaded, with multiple magazines to any sort of protest that you want. It's that simple. You don't have a right to break the law."

Numerous high-profile analysts responded to Patel's claim, with liberal influencer Ed Krassenstein saying simply, "This is a blatant lie by Kash Patel."...

Gun expert alarmed by US Attorney's 'completely insane claim' about DHS shooting

"This is an insane claim," said a gun policy expert in response to a Trump-appointed prosecutor's comment about the most recent killing by DHS agents.

Trump appointed California Assemblyman Bill Essayli to be the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California in April 2025. On Saturday, after Homeland Security announced the shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti, Essayli shared the agency's description of events along with a warning to any potential protesters.

"If you approach law enforcement with a gun, there is a high likelihood they will be legally justified in shooting you," the prosecutor wrote. "Don’t do it!"...

Victim disarmed 'before first shot was fired' in latest agent-involved killing: report

An initial investigation by an investigative journalism site reportedly shows that the recent immigration-involved shooting in Minneapolis took place after the man had been disarmed.

Independent site Bellingcat took what it called a "very close look at the killing" of ICU nurse Alex Pretti, and noted that its findings "clearly contradict the DHS narrative" that he was shot only after brandishing a deadly firearm at agents.

"Video of the shooting appears to show that a gun was taken from the man BEFORE THE FIRST shot was fired," Bellingcat states. "At least 10 shots being heard in total."...

UNC reinstates prof who had been suspended amid Charlie Kirk furor

UNC Chapel is immediately reinstating a professor suspended in response to a dubious link to celebrations of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

The university said in an email Friday morning that following a “threat assessment,” the university found there was no basis to conclude that Dwayne Dixon, a teaching associate professor in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, “poses a threat to university students, staff and faculty or has engaged in conduct that violates university policy.”

Dixon had received notification on Monday from Interim Provost James W. Dean Jr. that he was being placed on indefinite administrative leave with pay due to “recent reports and expressions of concerns regarding your alleged advocacy of politically motivated violence.”...
