'Getting too weird': GOP's 'thirst trap' stunt at convention backfires immediately

Republicans attacked one of their most targeted ideological foes by posting a picture of him in his underwear, which ultimately backfired.

At the Wednesday midterm convention in Dallas, the GOP showrunners tried to warn their audience about the politics of the left by posting a picture of progressive political commentator Hasan Piker in his underwear. Piker has often been criticized because of his far-left views, but the GOP's attack left onlookers baffled by what the party's angle must have been.

"What demographic are they going after?" asked writer Joe Flood.

MeidasTouch, a political news network, described the picture as a "thirst trap." Others noted that the picture blurred out his underwear but nothing else.

"The blur is killing me," laughed Politico reporter Will Steakin. "Lol not the blurring," mocked political podcaster Francesca Fiorentini.

"Things are getting weird in Dallas," commented writer Philippe Lemoine.

"Okay, this is getting too weird," agreed journalist Charles R. Davis.

"Republicans having a totally normal one at Trumpalooza," progressive political commentator Josh Greene joked.

"This is the same jumbotron that shows Kyrie Irving highlight reels," lamented journalist Paul Blest, referring to the fact that Piker's underwear picture was being displayed on the American Airlines Center, the home of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team.

"RIP Freud, you would've loved American politics in 2026," wrote Washington Post reporter Jack Herrera.

Headquarters, a political news account on X, posted "Trump backstage" followed by a video of Trump saying, "Look at the size of this guy. Boy, oh, boy."

"This probably isn't the one they think it is, especially since Grindr crashed in Texas as the Republican convention kicked off," Democratic politician and healthcare advocate Melanie D'Arrigo noted. Headquarters pointed out that Grindr was reportedly down in Dallas during the convention.

Piker reacted to seeing the attack with laughter and disbelief, and he jokingly said, "Don't show this to the Barbaras and the Deborahs. Republicans, what are you doing?"

MAGA senate candidate swiftly rebuked by critics after devastating gaffe

GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers mixed up Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed with progressive influencer Hasan Piker on Wednesday — and swiftly drew backlash.

Rogers' response to the Democratic Senate nominee's victory attributed Piker's comments to the Michigan candidate just hours after voters cast their ballots for him.

"I spent years hunting terrorists and bringing Osama bin Laden to justice," wrote Rogers, an Army veteran and former congressman. "Never in a million years did I think that I would be running against someone who believes America deserved 9/11."

Piker, who campaigned for El-Sayed over the last several months, has gained a large following among progressive Democrats because of his criticisms of the U.S. government.

He has been scrutinized for his past comments around the Sept. 11 attacks, which he made in 2019 during a livestream. He later clarified in an interview with his uncle, Turkish-American activist and media host Cenk Uygur, that the remarks were "inappropriate."

The internet reacted to Rogers' comments, calling him out for misidentifying El-Sayed and tying Piker's words to the Democratic nominee.

Democratic strategist Leslie Marshall called Rogers out for not knowing the difference between the two men.

"That was Hasan Piker. A different person. But I guess to Mike Rogers all those Brown people look alike," Marshall wrote on X.

David Weigel, who covers politics for Semafor, responded to the mistake.

"The Hasan-Abdul transitive property on display; Rogers says he’s running against someone who 'believes America deserved 9/11,'" Weigel wrote on X.

'That is curtains': Major left-wing influencer pulls plug on Platner over allegations

The new sexual assault allegation against Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner has prompted a response from a key player in the left-wing media ecosystem: streaming giant Hasan Piker.

According to Politico's Will Steakin, Piker reacted to the allegations live onstream, and made clear he considered it the end of Platner's ambitions for office.

"That is curtains," said Piker. "That is the trifecta. Okay, that is the trifecta of a reliable allegation. It’s holy (expletive) ... I believe this, this accusation. I believe this allegation."

According to Politico, Platner, a veteran and oyster farmer who is challenging Republican Sen. Susan Collins as an outsider, "entered [the] rural Maine home" of two-year acquaintance Jenny Racicot "uninvited one night in late 2021, deeply intoxicated, and forced himself on her while she repeatedly told him to stop." Racicot said she cut all contact with him after the incident.

Platner has denied all allegations against him, but in a video statement uploaded to X on Monday afternoon, he appeared to open the door to ending his campaign and allowing Democratic officials in Maine to select a replacement nominee. No official decision on this has been made publicly.

MAGA lawmaker calls for progressive American Hasan Piker to be banned from his own country

Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) said he thinks progressive influencer Hasan Piker should be banned from the United States after the United Kingdom blocked his visit with fellow commentator and his uncle, Cenk Uygur, TMZ reported on Wednesday.

The MAGA lawmaker was walking on Capitol Hill when a TMZ reporter asked Fine to comment on Piker's entry to the country being revoked over the weekend. The two were scheduled to speak at the SXSW London Festival but were turned away "because of their criticism of Israel," The BBC reported.

"Well I don't think he should be allowed into America, so I think that's a good start," Fine said.

The TMZ reporter responded and asked Fine, "What about freedom of speech?"

"People have freedom of speech but I think when you're a terrorist you should be held responsible for that," Fine said. "And I think he's clearly a supporter of terror. He's a walking billboard for the problem of birth tourism. He was brought here by his Turkish family, they had him, then they took him home, made him hate America, then sent him in to torment us. The guy's a horrible human being and I wouldn't let him into my country if it was up to me, so I don't blame them."

Piker, who is an American citizen, has condemned Islamophobia and been an outspoken critic of MAGA and the Trump administration. He has a large social media following, primarily through streaming on Twitch and weighing in on political topics. He frequently discusses social issues and engages in debates with commentators across the political spectrum.

The reporter pushed back again and suggested that "banning him from a country is [a] pretty crazy step for someone who is expressing his opinion."

"And by the way, they're allowed to do that," Fine said.

When the reporter pressed the Republican again on freedom of speech, he repeated his talking point.

"He promotes Muslim terror, so I think they're making the right decision," said Fine, making the unsubstantiated claim. "I'm surprised they did it but I think they did the right thing."

Fox News host mocked to his face in fiery on-air exchange with candidate

Fox News host Will Cain was confronted in a fiery exchange with Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed during a live interview on Tuesday.

Cain had asked if progressive influencer Hasan Piker, who has campaigned and promoted El-Sayed ahead of the August 4 primary, reflects his vision.

El-Sayed then pushed back.

"My vision is one where every American can afford their basic dignities and a good life," El-Sayed said. "My vision is one where you can get healthcare when you need it, my vision is one where our government is not wasting your taxpayer dollars dropping bombs on other people's kids and instead it's investing with you and your own. So far as I share that with anybody, I share that with Hasan, I share that with you, if that's what you do believe in."

The Democrat then asked Cain a question of his own, flipping the script.

"But I do think it's kind of crazy when you have the likes of — I don't know — Donald Trump on this show," El-Sayed said. "Donald Trump who says he wants to grab people by certain body parts. Donald Trump who wants to weaponize a paramilitary force against the Constitution itself. Do you agree with everything Trump has said?"

Cain appeared surprised and angry with El-Sayed's question.

"OK, we'll move this conversation in a productive manner," Cain said, pushing back on El-Sayed's comments about Trump.

"So you asked, now let me ask you. Would you invite President Donald Trump on the stage with you?" Cain said.

"I would love to be on the stage with Donald Trump. I would debate him tooth and nail," El-Sayed said, pushing back on Cain's comments.

"You're playing a slick word game!" Cain said, appearing frustrated by El-Sayed's response.

Trump officials serve subpoenas to two popular progressive influencers: report

The Trump administration is going after a pair of influencers because of their support and visits to Cuba, according to reporting by Fox News.

Progressive influencers Hasan Piker and CodePink cofounder Susan Medea Benjamin were served subpoenas by the Treasury Department on Saturday, Fox News reported.

The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control requested "financial, logistical and communications information" from the two, according to Fox News. The subpoenas are part of an investigation into possible violations of U.S. sanctions against Cuba.

Piker and members of CodePink were in Havana, Cuba as part of a "united front" to support the country's communist government, according to Fox News' reporting.

A former Turning Point USA leader and mother to one of Elon Musk's 14 children revealed that MAGA influencers are most afraid of one progressive influencer.

Ashley St. Clair, an ex-MAGA influencer turned critic of the right wing, was a guest on the podcast "Mean But True" with Suzanne Lambert on Tuesday and described how Hasan Piker has quietly worried conservative figures, who view him as influential.

"They are very scared of Hasan Piker, that is the one that they are scared of," St. Clair said.

"Because Hasan has the ability to capture, what I believe to be someone like the alt-right men as well," she said. "There is a crossover between the people who gravitate towards a Nick Fuentes or Tucker Carlson, that could find better solace in someone like Hasan. They are terrified of Hasan Piker — terrified."
