Republicans featured homeless veterans. They went silent when police killed one.

MILWAUKEE — As delegates gathered for the second day of the Republican National Convention under the theme of “Make America Safe Once Again,” prominent speakers made the plight of American military veterans a recurring theme.

“They give illegal immigrants free hotel rooms while homeless veterans sleep on the streets,” Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) said during his speech on Monday night. “Disgusting.”

But on Tuesday afternoon, in a park about a mile west of the Fiserv Forum, where Republicans have gathered for their convention, visiting officers from the Columbus Police Department fatally shot homeless veteran Samuel Sharpe Jr., 43....

'Just waiting to die': Social Security clawbacks drive some into homelessness

More than a year after the federal government first cut off her disability benefits, Denise Woods drives nightly to strip malls, truck stops, and parking lots around Savannah, Georgia, looking for a safe place to sleep in her Chevy. Woods, 51, said she had rented a three-bedroom house she shared with her adult son and grandson until March 2022, when the government terminated her disability payments without notice. 'I'd have them taken down': Trump says he removed homeless people's tents

Donald Trump on Saturday claimed that he had homeless encampment "tents" removed regularly when he was in office, as the former president called for a full federal government takeover of Washington, D.C.

Trump, who was speaking at a Turning Point USA event, earlier said he had underestimated Joe Biden. Later in the talk, Trump said he would sometimes have the tents belonging to homeless people "taken down" when he saw them as he came into the White House from the airport.

"I kept it beautiful," he said. "If I saw one tent or two tents or three tents as I was coming in from the airport, I'd have them taken down immediately because I knew that you'd have 100 tents and 1,000 tents if you don't do it."...

Washington police arrest suspect in shootings of homeless men

Washington (AFP) - Washington police arrested a suspect on Tuesday over the shooting of five homeless men in the US capital and in New York, officials said. Two men were killed and three wounded in the shootings that took place over the past 10 days, with Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser and her New York counterpart Eric Adams calling the perpetrator a "cold-blooded killer." Police said the suspect in the shootings was being interviewed by law enforcement in a tweet early on Tuesday. Authorities have offered large cash rewards for information that leads to the killer's arrest with police releasi......
