During Donald Trump's second presidency, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) plans to redirect $3.9 billion away from Housing First — a program that got underway under President Bill Clinton during the 1990s.

Trump officials are attacking Housing First as ineffective and claiming that it isn't doing enough to reduce homelessness, especially in major U.S. cities. But according to policy experts interviewed by the New York Times, the program is working much better than Trump allies appointed to HUD say it is.

Times reporter Jason DeParle, in an article published on Christmas Day 2025, explains, "The administration called the policy a permissive approach that had let homelessness rise, while supporters said Housing First was backed by proven science. Housing First provides chronically homeless people long-term subsidized housing and offers, but does not require treatment for mental illness or addiction. It contrasts with programs that condition help on sobriety or work, which Trump officials want to encourage — though there is less direct research to suggest their efficacy."...

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) purchased a new home in Washington, D.C., even after publicly bashing the nation's capital, according to a congressional financial disclosure.

Greene called Washington, D.C., a “crime ridden hell hole” and an “embarrassment” in a November 2022 tweet.

The four bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom extended split level was listed Jan. 13 for $600,000. Many migrant farmworkers living in California-run housing would settle full time in their communities if they could find affordable housing, and their children struggle to keep up in school as a result of frequent moves. This is what The Sacramento Bee learned during a year-long investigation into the state’s 24 migrant farmworker housing centers, which provide subsidized units for seasonal workers. A group of women has filed suit against Airbnb, claiming their Michigan vacation rental was infested with bats that attacked them. The claimants rented “The Castle,” a Victorian-style house in Alpena for their 50th high school reunion in late July, according to the lawsuit, which was filed by Detroit-based Marko Law. “This is every renter’s worst nightmare.
