Private mission carrying Saudi astronauts launches to ISS

Private mission carrying Saudi astronauts launches to ISS

Cape Canaveral (AFP) - The second-ever private mission to the International Space Station (ISS), organized by Axiom Space, blasted off from Florida Sunday, carrying the first two Saudi astronauts to travel to the orbiting laboratory.  Rayyanah Barnawi, a breast cancer researcher, is the first Saudi woman to voyage into space and is joined on the mission by fellow Saudi Ali Al-Qarni, a fighter pilot. The Axiom Mission 2 (Ax-2) crew took off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral in the southern US state of Florida at 5:37 pm (2137 GMT). The team also inc......

Giant SpaceX rocket leaves crater, serious damage at Texas base

Starbase (United States) (AFP) - Flying chunks of concrete, twisted metal sheets, craters blasted deep into the ground: the thunderous power of SpaceX's first test flight of Starship -- the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built -- inflicted serious damage on its Texas launch site. Repairing the damage from Thursday's unmanned test flight is expected to take months, potentially delaying further launch attempts and slowing the development of a rocket NASA plans to use on its upcoming Moon missions. SpaceX boss Elon Musk had said before the test that just getting Starship in the air without......

New York state vs New York City: the war over foie gras

Ferndale (United States) (AFP) - In New York, one of the most celebrated culinary centers in the world, a war over foie gras is pitting the city, backed by animal rights activists, against duck farmers and restaurant owners, whose position is supported by the state. Karen Frommer, enjoying a meal at an upscale restaurant in Manhattan, shrugs when asked about the Big Apple's ban on the sale, consumption and possession of the controversial delicacy. "We will never be able to deal with vegans at all," the 78-year-old tells AFP. "But if they are always focused on the feeding of the ducks, let them......
NASA Moon rocket launch delayed again, this time by storm

NASA Moon rocket launch delayed again, this time by storm

Miami (AFP) - NASA again rescheduled its long-delayed uncrewed mission to the Moon on Tuesday as Tropical Storm Nicole churned toward the east coast of Florida, officials said. A launch attempt, which had been scheduled for November 14, will now take place on November 16, Jim Free, a senior official at the US space agency, said on Twitter. It is the third delay of the highly-anticipated launch in as many months. "Our people are the most important aspect of our mission," wrote Free, who is NASA's Associate Administrator for Exploration Systems Development. "Adjusting our target launch date for ......

Stars appear to be aligned for Saturday Artemis rocket launch

Centre spatial Kennedy (Etats-Unis) (AFP) - The stars appear to be aligned for NASA's Moon rocket to finally blast off on Saturday, with weather forecasts favorable and technical issues that postponed the launch earlier this week resolved. Liftoff is scheduled for 2:17 pm local time (1817 GMT) from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with the potential for up to a two-hour delay if necessary. The chance for favorable weather conditions within that window sat at 60 percent Thursday evening.  "The weather looks good," and isn't expected to be a "showstopper," forecast analyst Melody Lovin said at a......
Astronomers predict SpaceX space junk will hit the Moon

Astronomers predict SpaceX space junk will hit the Moon

Washington (AFP) - A chunk of a SpaceX rocket that blasted off seven years ago and was abandoned in space after completing its mission will crash into the Moon in March, experts say. The rocket was employed in 2015 to put in orbit a NASA satellite called the Deep Space Climate Observatory. Since then the second stage of the rocket, or booster, has been floating in what mathematicians call a chaotic orbit, astronomer Bill Gray told AFP Wednesday. It was Gray who calculated the space junk's new collision course with the Moon. The booster passed by pretty close to the Moon in January in a rendezv......
