Oscar legend plans Jan. 6 film that could be 'nightmare' for Trump: report

Oscar winner Sean Penn has planned to take a closer look at the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol attack in a new film that is expected to be "a nightmare" for President Donald Trump, The Daily Beast reported on Tuesday.

Penn is slated to direct the untitled movie. He has spoken out against Trump, and the story will focus on a police officer "caught in the crossfire," The Beast reported. Academy Award-nominated actor Bradley Cooper is expected to star in the lead role, and the film will be produced by Warner Bros.

"Penn’s interest in writing such a narrative comes as little surprise," according to The Beast. "The One Battle After Another actor is not one to shy away from politics. And, in 2022, he attended a public hearing of the House Select Committee investigating the attack on the Capitol."...

Election denier who attended J6 rally exposed as face of landmark Supreme Court case

The lead plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court ruling that dismantled the Voting Rights Act is an election conspiracy theorist who attended the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the United States Capitol, according to a new Democracy Docket report published on Tuesday.

Phillip "Bert" Callais, a veteran living near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who was named as the lead plaintiff in Louisiana v. Callais, appeared on Capitol grounds during the Stop the Steal protest aimed at blocking President Joe Biden's certification as U.S. president. He apparently posted photos and video from the scene that day.

In the Supreme Court case, Callais was described as a "non-African American voter" from Brusly, Louisiana, "whose congressional district changed after the state redrew its map." Callais said he was a member of his local board of supervisors in 2024. ...

J6 rioter now accused of kidnapping and aggravated assault

A pattern has emerged as another Jan. 6 rioter has landed in legal trouble, as Republicans have aimed to minimize the insurrectionist rioters and whether they were armed, according to an MSNBC report Monday.

John Emanuel Banuelos, 40, was arrested last month on kidnapping and sexual assault charges on Oct. 17, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois, NBC reports. Banuelos reportedly lives in Utah, where an arrest warrant was issued in Salt Lake County on Oct. 1.

His sister apparently lives in the Chicago area, where he was arrested sitting in a ride-share vehicle outside a fast food restaurant, Fox 32 Chicago reports. He currently remains in custody....

'Insurrection!' Stephen Miller melts down at LA mayor after 'threat'

'Insurrection!' Stephen Miller melts down at LA mayor after 'threat'

Top White House aide Stephen Miller paved the way for President Donald Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act on Tuesday in a social media meltdown over video of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass saying the raids on undocumented migrants needed to stop.

In a video he shared on X, Mayor Bass asserted, "We need to stop the raids. This should not be happening in our city. It is not warranted and...the only thing it does is contribute to chaos. This was chaos that was started in Washington, D.C. On Thursday, the city was peaceful; on Friday it was not because of the intervention of the federal government."

That seemed to be enough ammunition for Miller to make his case for an "insurrection" that needed to be neutralized....

'Lies': Trump slammed for trading 'nonsense' to cover own admin's failure

'Lies': Trump slammed for trading 'nonsense' to cover own admin's failure

USA Today columnist Rex Huppke took on what he called Donald Trump's "lies" that the Los Angeles protests over ICE raids constituted an "insurrection" that needed to be put down by the federalized National Guard.

"Donald Trump, the president who glibly pardoned the men and women convicted in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, wants you to believe the second-largest city in America is in ruins, destroyed by 'insurrectionist mobs,'” Huppke wrote, adding, "That’s nonsense. Trump inhabits an imaginary, dystopian America spun from his opportunistic lies."

Huppke argued that Trump wants his base to believe that "predominantly peaceful protests" over ICE raids on tax-paying immigrants just going to work were "vast and violent."...

'Sick to my stomach': Critics appalled as taxpayers ordered to pay $5M to J6 rioter's kin

'Sick to my stomach': Critics appalled as taxpayers ordered to pay $5M to J6 rioter's kin

Critics of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurgency were dumbfounded to learn that the Trump administration had agreed to pay nearly $5 million to the family of slain rioter Ashli Babbitt, as first reported by The Washington Post.

An internal Justice Department investigation in 2021 under President Joe Biden cleared a U.S. Capitol Police officer of any wrongdoing for shooting Babbitt as she tried to breach the barricaded House Speaker’s Lobby, but the Trump administration reversed that ruling. President Donald Trump has framed Babbitt as a "martyr" and "patriot."

"Absolutely disgraceful," attorney Mark S. Zaid posted to X. "This will be an historical black stain - among so many others - on this Administration & those senior officials in Justice Department forever."...
