'False accusations': GOP rep lashes out after House investigation revealed

A Republican lawmaker is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for unspecified allegations, according to a breaking report on Wednesday.

Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC) responded on Thursday to news that he was under investigation, which Axios confirmed through a lawyer from the House Ethics Committee and aides who have worked with Edwards.

“I welcome any investigation given the professionalism my staff has demonstrated and my commitment to serving the people of Western NC," Edwards said in a statement. "Given the current political environment we are facing in our nation, it comes as no surprise that others, with their own political agendas, will attempt to raise false accusations in order to create news stories.”...

Noem's alleged lover hit with new probe as Dems try to root out 'shadow chief of staff'

A new investigation launched Wednesday demanded that the Department of Homeland Security retain all records relating to Corey Lewandowski, who has long been rumored to be having an affair with outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and served as her top aide.

Lewandowski was named directly in a letter from ranking Democrats in the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, The Daily Beast reported.

“The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and the Committee on Homeland Security are investigating serious allegations of high-level corruption, self-dealing, and mismanagement under the leadership of former Secretary Kristi Noem," according to the letter. "At the heart of these allegations sits Mr. Corey Lewandowski, who has used his close access to DHS leadership to wield outsized and undue influence over the Department. We request the DHS Office of Inspector General immediately initiate an investigation into Mr. Lewandowski’s role at DHS."...

In this Oklahoma town, most everyone knows someone who’s been sued by the hospital

McALESTER, Okla. — It took little more than an hour for Deborah Hackler to dispense with the tall stack of debt collection lawsuits that McAlester Regional Medical Center recently brought to small-claims court in this Oklahoma farm community. Hackler, a lawyer who sues patients on behalf of the hospital, buzzed through 51 cases, all but a handful uncontested, as is often the case. She bantered with the judge as she secured nearly $40,000 in judgments, plus 10% in fees for herself, according to court records. It’s a payday the hospital and Hackler have shared frequently over the past three deca......

Millions in opioid settlement funds sit untouched as overdose deaths rise

Nearly a year after Montana began receiving millions of dollars to invest in efforts to combat the opioid crisis, much of that money remains untouched. Meanwhile, the state’s opioid overdose and death counts continue to rise. The money is part of the approximately $50 billion that states and local governments will receive nationwide in opioid settlement funds over nearly two decades. The payments come from more than a dozen companies that made, distributed, or sold prescription opioid painkillers that were sued for their role in fueling the overdose epidemic. Many places have begun deciding wh......

She had a home and a good-paying job. Then illness and debt upended it all.

Sharon Woodward used to travel the country as a medical technician. She made good money and prided herself on her skills. But in her mid-40s, Woodward retired after being diagnosed with a debilitating form of arthritis. Her condition required expensive drugs and regular medical care, which left her with more than $20,000 in medical debts. She had no option but to move out of her home and restart her life in a small town in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. At times, she has relied on food banks to get enough to eat. Woodward is one of 100 million people in the U.S. with health care debt. Watch her......

J6 investigator: We had some evidence on Rep. Scott Perry — but the DOJ has the goods

The Justice Department uncovered more evidence of Rep. Scott Perry's (R-PA) involvement in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S Capitol and the attempt to overthrow the 2020 election, according to court filings revealed this week.

Speaking to MSNBC on Thursday, former House Select Committee investigator Tim Heaphy explained that they were able to obtain a lot of information on Perry through other sources, but that the lawmaker fought cooperating. He explained that there was no choice but to simply move forward. Perry was called, but so was Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), who also refused. Others, such as Steve Bannon and Mark Meadows were accused of contempt of Congress.

Under the power of the DOJ, however, special counsel Jack Smith has been able to go beyond the info and obtain damning information about the sitting lawmaker. ...
