Trump DOJ's own star witness torpedoed its case against indicted journalist: report

The Department of Justice's attempt to prosecute a journalist blew up after its own witness' testimony, according to a new report on Friday.

The Trump DOJ indicted journalist Georgia Fort earlier this year for a case stemming from coverage of the anti-ICE protests that interrupted a Sunday service at Cities Church, a Southern Baptist congregation in Minnesota. It's the same case in which former CNN journalist Don Lemon was arrested and indicted.

According to a blog post from Marcy Wheeler of Emptywheel, the DOJ's case against Fort has started to fall apart after grand jury transcripts revealed witness testimony. Wheeler suggested that the witness could even have been the Cities Church pastor whom the DOJ said felt threatened by Fort....

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had a harsh response Thursday to a journalist who questioned the ICE killing of mother Renee Good in Minneapolis.

The fatal shooting of Good, who was gunned down driving in her car last week by ICE agent Jonathan Ross, has raised questions over the agency's aggressive tactics and response to protests. The investigative reporter who worked at the conservative site founded by Glenn Beck since 2003, was in federal custody on Friday based on his covering the Capitol Riot on January 6, 2021.

A copy of an FBI affidavit suggests prosecutors are taking aim at Baker showing solidarity with the pro-Trump mob that had sieged the Capitol in an effort to thwart the certification of the 2020 election results to President Joe Biden fueled by their belief there was widespread fraud....

Journalist ordered to pay $800 per day until she reveals her source

Former Fox News reporter Catherine Herridge has been held in civil contempt of court for refusing to divulge a source at the heart of a story that triggered a defamation suit.

Herridge will be fined $800 dollars for every day that she does not comply with the court's order to disclose the source.

"The Court does not reach this result lightly," said the ruling from U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper. "It recognizes the paramount importance of a free press in our society and the critical role that confidential sources play in the work of investigative journalists like Herridge. Yet the Court also has its own role to play in upholding the law and safeguarding judicial authority. Applying binding precedent in this Circuit, the Court resolved that Chen’s need for the requested information to vindicate her rights under the Privacy Act overcame Herridge’s qualified First Amendment reporter’s privilege in this case."...
