'Stand down': Legal experts say Judge Cannon's latest Trump filing may be 'benign'

Judge Aileen Cannon on Wednesday entered a tiny paperless order into the docket in Donald Trump's classified documents case, prompting several experts to warn that the judge may toss the entire case.

Experts from around the country immediately jumped to a certain phrase from Cannon's order, labeling her words "troublesome" and raising the specter of a dismissal. She said some of the Trump-aligned court filings "may be of considerable help" in determining if the case should be entirely tossed.

But those legal analysts may have jumped the gun, according to Obama appointee Eric Columbus....

Judge Cannon just showed her 'inexperience' or 'bias' in latest Trump hearing: expert

Judge Aileen Cannon, the jurist overseeing Donald Trump's criminal case over allegedly stashed confidential documents, showed that she's either in the bag for the former president or that she's too much of a novice on the bench to handle the momentous case, a former prosecutor said on Friday.

Andrew Weissmann, the former top prosecutor on former special counsel Robert Mueller's team, gave his thoughts on Cannon's hearing from earlier Friday, where she fielded recommendations from both sides on potential trial dates in 2024.

She didn't settle on a date, but she did bring up a DOJ rule that she appeared to misinterpret, according to Weissmann's comments....

Judge Cannon created a 'secret docket' in Trump's documents case: legal expert

The Florida judge overseeing Donald Trump's criminal case over classified documents appears to have inadvertently created a "secret docket," a legal expert said on Wednesday.

The former president was indicted after being accused of unlawfully stashing the confidential documents from his time at the White House, and of refusing to give them up when subpoenaed by federal authorities. Since that time, Judge Aileen Cannon has been repeatedly accused of bias in favor of the ex-president.

Judge Cannon's new orders in Trump docs case make her next move 'difficult to determine'

Judge Cannon on Sunday issued two new orders in Donald Trump's criminal case over classified documents in Florida, further mystifying a legal expert about her next move and setting the stage for a Friday hearing.

Trump was indicted in the case by Special Counsel Jack Smith, who accused the former president of stashing away classified documents from the White House and refusing to return them when subpoenaed by federal authorities. Trump has consistently claimed he had a right to keep the documents, and even said he couldn't be prosecuted because he is immune from prosecution because he deemed the documents "personal" while he was president.

More recently, Smith sought to keep Cannon from making certain witness information public, and Cannon sought information from the parties on that topic....

Trump cites Biden's special counsel report in a new filing in criminal docs case

Donald Trump's legal team late Friday evening filed a brief before Aileen Cannon, the Florida judge overseeing the former president's criminal documents case, and cited the recent special counsel report about Joe Biden.

Trump filed a reply brief in further support of his motions to compel discovery in the case, saying he deserves an order regarding the "scope of the prosecution team, and to compel Special Counsel's Office to produce certain discoverable materials."

"The Defendants seek judicial intervention to thwart ongoing discovery abuses by the Special Counsel’s Office in connection with a case that should have never been brought and must ultimately be dismissed on the basis of, inter alia, selective and vindictive prosecution," Trump's legal team wrote in the filing. ...
