'You know Aileen Cannon?' Trump torched for 'judge-shopping' his new 'ridiculous' lawsuit

'You know Aileen Cannon?' Trump torched for 'judge-shopping' his new 'ridiculous' lawsuit

Bulwark podcaster Tim Miller was quick to note that President Donald Trump dumped his latest “ridiculous lawsuit” against a media company in a very friendly place.

“Interestingly, this was filed in the federal court for the Southern District of Florida,” said Miller. “Does that ring a bell with anybody? Now, why might he be doing it there?”

Trump announced his suit against Rupert Murdoch and Dow Jones, the parent company of The Wall Street Journal, over the publication of a story alleging he sent a “bawdy” birthday letter in 2003 to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who died in 2019....

Hunter Biden uses Judge Cannon's Trump dismissal ruling in bid to ditch criminal case

Hunter Biden uses Judge Cannon's Trump dismissal ruling in bid to ditch criminal case

Hunter Biden's legal team filed a motion Thursday using Judge Aileen Cannon's recent ruling in Donald Trump's documents case.

On Monday, Cannon agreed to dismiss Trump's case in Florida over the theft of classified documents and other related charges under the guise that special counsel Jack Smith's appointment was unconstitutional. The whole case was dismissed because the special counsel funding was unconstitutional, the judge held.

Legal analysts warned that the decision was likely a gift to Hunter Biden when it was filed. ...

Jack Smith pushes back hard as Judge Cannon weighs theory he's illegally appointed

Special counsel Jack Smith's team is pushing back as District Judge Aileen Cannon weighs a legal theory propounded by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas that Smith's appointment is unconstitutional.

Smith filed a rebuttal of this idea with Cannon, who is presiding over former President Donald Trump's federal classified documents case in South Florida.

"Trump’s notice ... refers to Justice Thomas’s concurrence addressing the Special Counsel’s authority to prosecute," wrote Smith. "That single-Justice concurrence — addressing an issue that Trump did not raise (See Sup. Ct. Tr. 33-34), that the parties did not brief, and that was not relevant to the question presented to, or decided by, the Court — neither binds this Court nor provides a sound basis to deviate from the uniform conclusion of all courts to have considered the issue that the Attorney General is statutorily authorized to appoint a Special Counsel."...

'Unlike anything I've ever seen': Expert says 'garbage' in Trump filing warrants sanctions

A former federal prosecutor Saturday highlighted the purported hypocrisies associated with the actions of Judge Aileen Cannon, who is overseeing Donald Trump's criminal Espionage Act case in Florida.

Glenn Kirschner, who frequently appears on MSNBC as a legal analyst, explained that Special Counsel Jack Smith filed a gag order request back in May, but that it still hasn't been answered by Cannon.

"Judge Cannon has yet to rule on that motion back in May, a narrow restriction... designed to protect law enforcement," he said in a video for "Justice Matters." ...

'It always has thorns': Expert shows how Judge Cannon's anti-Trump ruling hurts Jack Smith

Judge Aileen Cannon denied a major dismissal motion in the Espionage Act criminal case Donald Trump faces in Florida, but she still included some barbs for prosecutor Jack Smith, a legal expert highlighted on Saturday.

Cannon earlier in the day rejected a bid by Trump co-defendant Walt Nauta, the former president's valet and his assistant, to dismiss the case for selective and vindictive prosecution. And before that, a local prosecutor put the judge, who has been accused of bias in favor of the ex-president who appointed her to the lifetime position, on notice that she might soon be removed from the case.

MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin weighed in over the weekend, saying that Cannon is always looking for a way to jab prosecutors in Trump's case, even when she's handing a co-defendant a loss. ...

'Judge Cannon gets it right': Florida jurist denies major dismissal motion in Trump case

Judge Cannon has rejected a major dismissal request for a Donald Trump co-defendant in the Espionage Act case in Florida, according to court records Saturday.

Cannon, who earlier in the day was put on notice by a former prosecutor who said she was in danger of being removed from the classified documents case, has been criticized for appearing biased in favor of the former president who appointed her to her lifetime position on the federal bench in Florida.

Over the weekend, however, Cannon surprised some onlookers by rejecting a motion by Walt Nauta, Trump's valet, to be dismissed from the case for alleged selective prosecution and vindictive prosecution....
