Comment claiming advanced info on Trump verdict 'looks increasingly likely to be a hoax'

Judge Juan Merchan notified Donald Trump's legal team and prosecutors on Friday that there was an explosive comment about the ex-president's jury posted online, but that comment looks increasingly likely to be a hoax, according to a report.

The judge overseeing the criminal case in which Trump was convicted of 34 felonies for an attempt to cover-up hush money payments meant to influence the 2016 election let the parties know that a comment claiming to be from a juror's cousin was posted on the court's Facebook page around the time Trump was found guilty of all charges in the case involving an alleged affair with an adult film star.

It was almost immediately a blockbuster story on social media, with experts debating the importance of the development in the Trump case. One MSNBC legal expert said the comment was "unbelievably bad."...

'Unbelievably bad': Legal experts debate significance of online comment on Trump jury

Judge Juan Merchan, who presided over former President Donald Trump's criminal conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records, caused a stir on Friday when he notified both legal teams that the New York Court System has become aware of a response to a Facebook post from someone named "Michael Anderson" purporting to be a cousin of a juror, saying that Trump was going to be convicted.

Some legal experts sounded the alarm, warning it could give ammunition for Trump's legal team to throw the conviction out — but other commentators said to hit the brakes, because there's a lot we don't know yet.

"If this person is actually related to a juror, this is unbelievably bad. And if the user knows no one who was on the jury, it's even worse," wrote legal analyst Lisa Rubin on X....

'Really bad' for Trump: Ex-prosecutor says jury is focusing in on 'conspiracy' elements

'Really bad' for Trump: Ex-prosecutor says jury is focusing in on 'conspiracy' elements

The jury appears to be homing in on the "conspiracy" elements of the Manhattan criminal hush money case, said former federal prosecutor David Kelley on MSNBC Wednesday — and that's a disturbing sign for former President Donald Trump.

This comes after the jury asked Judge Juan Merchan for a refresher on testimony from David Pecker and Michael Cohen, former Trump associates who formed key parts of the prosecution's case.

"So, it might sound worse for Trump, better for the prosecution, because they're now going to hear it back and know that Hope Hicks and Trump's personal secretary and, yes, Cohen, whatever you think of him, a lot of other people added to Pecker's testimony," said anchor Ari Melber, himself an attorney. "I never heard — and again, I try to cover this as fairly as I can — I never heard anyone really undercut his core points. Here's what he said about his consciousness of all of this. Even while he's doing it, the defense is saying, it happens all the time. Pecker, whose direct testimony says, he told his own 'Enquirer' leadership, he told them, we're going to try and help the campaign. We're going to keep it as quiet as possible. I want it confidential. Is that bad?"...

'Not a good indicator for Donald Trump': Ex-insider explains jury's request for testimony

'Not a good indicator for Donald Trump': Ex-insider explains jury's request for testimony

There's no indication yet of a verdict being reached in the jury deliberations for former President Donald Trump's criminal hush money case in Manhattan — but the questions the jury asked Judge Juan Merchan before being dismissed for the day were an ominous sign for the former president, correspondent Lachlan Cartwright told MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace.

Specifically the jury asked Merchan to re-review the testimony of Trump's former attorney and fixer Michael Cohen — whom Trump's legal team spent the entire trial trying to undermine and discredit — and former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker, who facilitated "catch and kill" schemes that were part of the same pattern that saw the alleged hush payments submitted to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

"We'll give you the last word," said Wallace. "What is your sort of Spidey Sense picking up that these are the things that the jury is first interested in hearing more about?"...

Legal expert says Trump dropped a 'hint' about the jury — and it's a 'gift' to prosecutors

Legal expert says Trump dropped a 'hint' about the jury — and it's a 'gift' to prosecutors

Donald Trump just dropped a "hint" on social media about the jury instructions in his criminal case in New York, and it shows prosecutors have a new advantage, a former prosecutor said Monday.

Catherine Christian, a onetime assistant district attorney, appeared on MSNBC to discuss Trump's hush money cover-up case, where he stands accused of paying off adult film star Stormy Daniels in order to impact the results of the 2016 presidential election. That case goes to closing arguments on Tuesday.

The host asked Christian a series of questions about Trump's ongoing trial, including one about a Truth Social post in which Trump appears to be complaining about the instructions that will be handed down to jurors before they make their decision. Those decisions are not yet public....
