Trial of Joe Biden's son set to begin

WILMINGTON, Del. — Joe Biden's son Hunter goes on trial Monday on gun charges, the first prosecution in U.S. history for the child of a sitting president — just as the Democratic leader is seeking to accelerate his campaign for reelection.

The 54-year-old denies three felony counts stemming from his purchase of a .38-caliber Colt Cobra revolver in 2018 when, by his own admission, he was heavily addicted to drugs.

The Yale-trained lawyer and lobbyist-turned-artist has been plagued by legal troubles and controversies that have been a drag on his father's campaign, mostly connected to alcoholism and crack cocaine addiction....

Convicted double murderer to be executed in Missouri

Washington (AFP) - A Missouri man convicted of murdering his cousin and her husband is to be executed in Missouri on Tuesday, despite widespread calls for his life to be spared. Brian Dorsey, 52, is to be put to death by lethal injection at 6:00 pm Central Time (2300 GMT) for the 2006 murders of Sarah Bonnie, 25, and her husband Ben Bonnie, 28, in New Bloomfield, Missouri. Dorsey pleaded guilty to shooting the couple with a shotgun after they took him in for the night to protect him from drug dealers who were trying to collect on a debt. The Bonnies' four-year-old daughter, who was in the hous......

Abortion rights amendment can be on the ballot: Florida Supreme Court

Miami (AFP) - Florida's Supreme Court on Monday paved the way for a ban on abortion after just six weeks of pregnancy, even as it allowed an abortion rights amendment to be on the ballot in November. The pair of decisions threw into sharp relief the bitter fight over reproductive rights, an issue that Democrats are championing in an election year. Abortion is currently allowed in the southern state at up to 15 weeks of pregnancy but a Republican-backed law slashes that to six weeks, before many women even know they are pregnant. The conservative-dominated state supreme court was considering bo......

Judge in hush money case says he's 'prepared' to 'dispense justice' to Trump

New York State Supreme Court Judge Juan M. Merchan suggested he intends to afford former President Donald Trump a fair trial in a hush-money case.

Last week, Merchan temporarily postponed Trump's New York criminal trial to give the defendant time to examine recent-released government documents about the decision to prosecute his former attorney, Michael Cohen, but not to indict him.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Merchan called Trump's trial "intense."...

Mourners still grieving Navalny in Moscow cemetery

A day after the funeral on Friday of Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, people continued on Saturday to bid farewell to the Russian dissident at his grave in Moscow's Borisov cemetery, undeterred by the presence of police. Independent Russian media reported that the police allowed the mourners to stay unhindered at the grave and lay flowers. Pictures of the gravesite showed a sea of flowers and wreaths, and a Russian Orthodox cross with a photo of a smiling Navalny. According to the authorities, Navalny died on February 16 in a prison camp in the Yamal region, 1,900 kilometres north-east of Mosc......

Thousands attend emotional Navalny funeral in Moscow

Thousands of people defiantly bade an emotional farewell on Friday to Alexei Navalny, the Russian dissident who died two weeks ago in an Arctic prison, at times unable to contain their anger at the authorities they blamed for his death. At the church dedicated to the "Assuage My Sorrows" icon of the Mother of God in Moscow's south-eastern Maryino district on Friday, mourners carrying flowers crowded around metal bars to bid farewell to the opposition leader. In the church, pictures of Navalny's body in the open coffin, covered in flowers and surrounded by numerous people during the service wer......
