What this rush to marriage gets you

What this rush to marriage gets you

I'm usually wary of trend pieces, but this one in Marie Claire by Kimberly Goad has some meat to it,  if only because it has some research indicating that 30% of now-divorced women married knowing from the beginning it was a bad idea.  I want to bring attention to it, because I want to address the real dangers that strem from the slew of books and articles and TV shows that are dedicated to making women fear that they're never going to fall in love and get married if they don't hide their intelligence, downplay their ambitions, abandon feminism, and lower their standards.

For those who haven't seen it, it's well worth it to read this response by Will Wilkinson to Kay Hymowitz's suggestion that women's human rights should be repealed so men don't have to ask if they're going dutch on dates. It's interesting and compassionate towards male complaints without giving one iota on the idea that men should suck it up and, gasp!, start treating women like people. In fact, Wilkinson really fleshes out the "treat women like people" idea, which is often a response to men who trot out the Nice Guy® complaint about how they don't have the secret code to push to get women---a single, undifferentiated group---to give them sex and affection. I'm forced to quote at length.

[rebelmouse-image 24748406 original_size="400x300" expand=1]Apparently, Kay Hymowitz wrote an article mourning that young men spend a lot of time playing video games instead of making babies. I have my doubts---Hymowitz is a standard issue wingnut welfare writer, and therefore blaming men for anything is against her contract, unless said men can be proven not to be white---but nonetheless she's come around to make it very clear to her benefactors that if there's something wrong with young men who don't get married and make babies right out of college (something that's debatable in itself), then all of the blame can be placed on the shoulders of women. 100%, complete, not a speck of blame goes to men for male behavior. I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief.
