Your first running event? How to kill it — without killing yourself

Your first running event? How to kill it — without killing yourself

Maybe a co-worker has talked you into taking part in the upcoming company run. Or you've resolved to take on more sporting challenges and registered for a 10-kilometre run or half marathon in your city. How best to prepare? If you're an inexperienced runner, you should consider your fitness level and whether you're really up to the undertaking. "It's probably a bad idea to prepare for a marathon if, for example, you're overweight or have a cardiovascular disease," says sports medicine physician Dr Thomas Schneider. He advises novice runners to first consult their GP, who can give them a medica......
Before you're too nice, think twice

Before you're too nice, think twice

The stranger sitting across from you in the train drones on about their problems. You listen and nod politely, although you are dying to put in your earbuds and doze off to soft music. Or, at a company meeting, silence greets the question of who will take the minutes. So you volunteer. Perhaps you are a person who is always willing to fulfil a request, or help out in a pinch even without being asked. Who is especially nice, considerate, attentive, self-sacrificing - always there for others. Perhaps this is how people describe you. A very positive assessment, one might think. But these qualitie......

Workers approve latest contract at Boeing supplier Spirit

New York (AFP) - Striking workers at Spirit Aerosystems, a key Boeing supplier, will return to the factory after approving an enhanced four-year labor contract, the union said Thursday. The International Association of Machinists (IAM) and Aerospace Workers, which launched a strike last week at the Wichita, Kansas plant after rejecting an earlier pact, announced the ratification in a press release. The plant builds parts for the Boeing 737 MAX and 787, playing a major role in Boeing's supply chain for its two best-selling jets. "We knew these negotiations were not going to be your typical set ......

Los Angeles school strikers get 30 percent pay hike

Los Angeles (AFP) - School workers who shut down education for around half a million pupils in Los Angeles this week with a three-day strike won a 30 percent pay hike, their union said Friday. Bus drivers, cafeteria workers and special education assistants employed by Los Angeles Unified School District -- the second biggest in the United States -- halted work on Tuesday demanding an end to what they called "poverty wages." With teachers refusing to cross the picket lines, the county's huge public school system ground to a halt. After talks between the Service Employees International Union Loc......

Los Angeles schools shut as workers stage mass walkout

Los Angeles (AFP) - More than 500,000 children were shut out of lessons Tuesday as school workers in Los Angeles began a three-day walkout over pay. Bus drivers, cafeteria workers and special education assistants employed by Los Angeles Unified School District -- the second biggest in the United States -- are striking over what they say are "poverty wages." The roughly 30,000 members of the powerful United Teachers Los Angeles union will not cross the picket line and will therefore not be working, the union said. Service Employees International Union Local 99 says many of its members earn as l......

Star Garden Topless Dive Bar performers organizing to unionize in Los Angeles: report

Los Angeles (AFP) - Performers at a Los Angeles strip club took their first steps toward unionization Wednesday, becoming the latest US workers to seek collective bargaining power. Dancers at the Star Garden Topless Dive Bar submitted a petition with the federal government, beginning a process that could see them represented by performers union Actors' Equity, in what officials described as a first. "We like what we do," said Velveeta, a Star Garden dancer. "We would like our jobs even more if we had basic worker protections." Equity already represents over 51,000 performers and stage managers......
