U.S. House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) — the second-ranking Democrat in the House — is the latest member to become entangled in an epidemic of thefts affecting public officials.

Federal records indicate that a $5,000 check from the Unum Group Political Action Committee to Clark’s campaign committee was “fraudulently intercepted” sometime before Nov. 14.

Unum Group Political Action Committee, which is sponsored by the Unum Group insurance and employee benefits company, reported the theft to the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday morning, according to a Raw Story review of public records....

The Minnesota Democratic Party and the International Franchise Association are the latest political committees to be victims of fraudulent check cashing, a Raw Story review of Federal Election Commission records showed.

A scammer stole $490 from the Minnesota Democratic Party — formally known as the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) — on Aug. 14.

The International Franchise Association Franchising Political Action Committee also reported a thief cashing a $2,500 check on Feb. 7, according to recent correspondence with the Federal Election Commission....

Lyft on May 25 reimbursed Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign, which in a filing with the Federal Election Commission described the matter as a “refund of fraudulent charges.”

A fraudulent check scam cost the Oregon Republican Party more than $800, making the political group the latest victim in a string of attacks targeting campaigns and committees this year.

The Oregon Republican Party lost $842.99 when a suspicious check made payable to “Jeremiah Grieser” was deposited at Alliant Credit Union on May 30, according to a Salem Police Department report obtained by Raw Story.

An Oregon Republican Party official “discovered a suspicious check that did not match any known format of checks used by the Oregon Republican Party. Upon investigating further, she discovered that the check was fraudulent and had been fabricated using the Umpqua Bank account information of the Oregon Republican Party,” said the report filed by Michael Vega, an officer with the department....

Five more Republican lawmakers surrender FTX money to U.S. Marshals Service

Money keeps pouring into the U.S. Marshals Service from federal political campaigns and committees who received funds from FTX, the now-defunct cryptocurrency company, according to a Raw Story analysis of federal campaign records.

Another five political campaigns sent $15,500 in campaign cash to the government agency best known for hunting down suspected criminals, adding to at least $160,000 collected from 30 federal political candidates and party committees, as Raw Story first reported.

The five new campaigns that gave up the money are fundraising entities for Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-NY), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR), Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). ...

Why big-time politicians are surrendering gobs of campaign cash to an unlikely source

Why big-time politicians are surrendering gobs of campaign cash to an unlikely source

More than 30 federal political candidates and party committees have together surrendered at least $160,000 worth of donor dollars to the U.S. Marshals Service in recent weeks, according to a Raw Story analysis of federal campaign records.

It’s an all-but-unprecedented relinquishing of precious campaign cash to a government agency best known for hunting down suspected criminals, and even veteran election officials say they’ve never seen anything quite like it in U.S. politics.

But this isn’t any routine situation: Most of these “disgorgements” stem from contributions made by executives of bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, including former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, Raw Story’s analysis indicates. And the Department of Justice is urging campaigns to give the money up....
