Woman in ‘shock’ over $6,000 bill for lifesaving rabies treatment

A suspected bat bite turned into a $6,000 hospital bill for a Seminole County, Florida, woman. Worried she may have been exposed to rabies, Caroline Ford sought treatment from AdventHealth Altamonte Springs. She called her insurance company, Anthem Blue Cross, and expected she’d need to pay about $600 based on her conversation over the phone. Rabies is fatal if left untreated. A regimen of immune globulin and four vaccination shots over two weeks is lifesaving if administered quickly after exposure to the deadly disease. “With rabies, there are no second chances,” she said. “That’s why I decid......

TIJUANA, Mexico — Rising Mexican corridos singer Jesús Cárdenas, better known as Chuy Montana, was shot to death Wednesday on a stretch of the Rosarito to Tijuana highway, according to multiple reports. The body was found handcuffed with gunshot wounds at the roadside, Tijuana’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Fernando Sánchez said Thursday to local media. Washington state House bill would make it illegal for police to lie during interrogations

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Victims of false confessions that lead to wrongful convictions, like Ted Bradford, want to prohibit police from using deceptive tactics during interrogations, and they have the backing of some lawmakers. "It was the worst experience of my life," said Bradford, Washington's first DNA exoneree, when recalling his 1996 interrogation when he was accused of sexual assault. "I knew I was innocent ... no matter how many times I told them over and over, I didn't do this." House Bill 1062, sponsored by Rep. Strom Peterson, D-Edmonds, aims to make defendants' statements inadmissible in ......

A church began ringing its bells again. Not everyone is happy

PHILADELPHIA -- Late last year, Rev. Alfred Bradley planned a Christmastime surprise for the neighborhood he grew up in. He was bringing back the sound of church bells to the Fishtown neighborhood. Thanks to two crafty volunteers and two generous families, the Holy Name of Jesus Church on E. Berks and Gaul Streets received a bell tower upgrade with a new electronic carillon system and big speakers. The entire project cost less than $5,000. “It was just our attempt to, we thought in a positive way, contribute to the sound of the city and maybe bring a bit of spirituality into an urban landscape......

Seattle to Portland Amtrak train service suspended due to landslide

SEATTLE — A landslide north of Vancouver has disrupted passenger train service between Seattle and Portland, Oregon, until Sunday night, according to the Washington state Department of Transportation. The slide, which occurred south of Kelso early Saturday morning, blocked the railroad tracks and triggered a 24-hour moratorium for all passenger trains per BNSF Railway rules, WSDOT spokesperson Janet Matkin said. The moratorium affects several West Coast Amtrak lines, including Coast Starlight trains. Trains previously scheduled to terminate in Seattle will instead terminate in Portland. Buses ......

737 MAX 9: What to know as Alaska Airlines cancels more flights

Days after a chunk of a Boeing 737 MAX 9 airplane flew off while the plane was in the air, a lot of questions remain unanswered. The MAX 9, the less popular of the two MAX models currently certified to carry passengers, is still grounded. The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating. And when the planes will start returning to the air is still unknown. But in the days since the flight, residents found the fuselage piece — a plug covering a hole cut for an unused emergency door— that came loose and a passenger’s phone that survived the 16,000-foot fall. The NTSB has determine......
