President Donald Trump's latest crises involving Venezuela and suspected war crimes committed in the Caribbean Sea, the Jeffrey Epstein saga and a struggling economy have left his allies stunned, according to new reporting.

Republican lawmakers who have given Trump power — from his unpopular tariff policy to pulling back on Congressionally approved funding — are now aiming to curb his moves, according to New York Times analysis published Thursday by opinion writer Michelle Cottle.

"But this rare pushback is bigger than any one policy disagreement or operational misstep. It reflects the newly precarious situation in which the president finds himself," Cottle wrote. The meeting between New York City mayor elect Zohran Mamdani and Donald Trump did not go according to plan, according to a biographer.

Michael Wolff suggested the president's plan had been to be tough but instead Trump looked as though he was won over by the Democratic socialist during their Oval Office press conference. The slip up from Trump, who had reportedly been set to be tough on Mamdani only to say he and the NYC mayoral elect agreed on several issues, has made some insiders "shiver", The Daily Beast reported.

Wolff quoted a source during an appearance on the Inside Trump's Head podcast, claiming an insider had been brief to expect quite the opposite from Trump during his meeting with Mamdani. ...

Zohran Mamdani, now the New York City Democratic mayoral nominee after an upset victory last month, has sparked panic among wealthy Wall Street financiers and conservatives with his progressive agenda, but now, it’s something else about the 33-year-old rising star that’s drawing their ire.
