Fauci says federal approval of Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca vaccines is ‘weeks away’

President-elect Joe Biden’s goal of vaccinating 100 million Americans during his first 100 days in office got a seal of approval from the country’s top infectious disease expert on Sunday. “The feasibility of his goal is absolutely clear, there’s no doubt about it,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He also voiced approval for steps Biden has outlined. The president-elect promised Friday to boost vaccine production and distribution as the coronavirus outbreak continues to rage. “What the president-elect is ......

How one school counselor is trying to tackle a pandemic mental health crisis

SAN DIEGO – School counselor Bonnie Hayman is charged with taking care of 1,100 middle-school kids and almost 100 staff during a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic. Hayman, who works at the currently closed La Mesa Arts Academy in the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District, is seeing up close how months of school closures, isolation and pandemic-induced stress are harming children. Student anxiety and depression have been rising at the school. Teachers tell her about students who have lost family members to COVID-19, who don't have enough food to eat or who were crying or looking tired during a Zoom c......

Why the new COVID-19 mutations may not spread as fast as you fear

As if 2020 needed any more alarming headlines, each day brings news about the new “mutant” strain of the coronavirus identified in Great Britain, where health officials have proclaimed that it spreads far more readily than the microbe that has been crisscrossing the globe for months. Well, maybe. Scientists who study the biology of viruses say that so far, there is no proof that this new strain is more transmissible, only what amounts to circumstantial evidence. Human behavior and random chance also could explain the sudden emergence of the strain which, given that it was identified in a Color......

Excedrin recalled for holes in bottles

More than 433,000 bottles of Excedrin are being recalled because of holes in the bottom of some bottles that can pose a poisoning risk to children. The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced last week that GSK Consumer Healthcare, a division of pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, is recalling five brands of the popular headache medication because of the packaging defects. The holes in the plastic bottles can allow the pills to slip through and harm children who swallow them. Excedrin contains aspirin and acetaminophen, which federal law requires be in child-resistant packaging. GSK in ......

Suicide rate decreased for the first time in a decade in 2019: CDC

PHILADELPHIA — New data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that the national suicide rate last year decreased for the first time since 1999. While the suicide rate for 2019 declined by 2.1% — a total of 833 fewer deaths — from the previous year, experts said this progress could be derailed by the coronavirus pandemic. The effects of COVID-19 on suicide won’t be measurable for some time, but rates are expected to have increased during 2020 as mental health worsened. “We don’t know why it happened,” said Dan Romer, research director at the Annenberg Public Policy Cen......

NY Attorney General James launches probe into Brooklyn health network accused of violating COVID vaccine rules

NEW YORK — New York Attorney General Letitia James is launching an investigation into a Brooklyn-based health care network that publicly boasted about doling out coronavirus vaccine shots on a “first come, first serve basis” in apparent violation of the state’s restrictions on inoculations. In a statement Monday, James said her office opened the probe after learning that COVID-19 vaccine doses were “wrongfully distributed and administered” by ParCare Community Health Network, which serves predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods across Brooklyn and upstate Orange County. “In order for the v......
