After seeing patients and taking risks all year, these doctors have been left out of the vaccination process

PHILADELPHIA – Doctors, nurses, and staff at private practices and clinics across Pennsylvania have been left guessing when they would get access to a COVID-19 vaccine, even as they regularly interact with patients infected with the coronavirus. Even physicians who are “on staff” with a hospital system — not on the facility’s payroll but able to access services and equipment for their patients — have largely been left out as those institutions have had free rein to determine which of their employees can have access to limited vaccine doses. “They just kind of started doing their people without......

How one school counselor is trying to tackle a pandemic mental health crisis

SAN DIEGO – School counselor Bonnie Hayman is charged with taking care of 1,100 middle-school kids and almost 100 staff during a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic. Hayman, who works at the currently closed La Mesa Arts Academy in the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District, is seeing up close how months of school closures, isolation and pandemic-induced stress are harming children. Student anxiety and depression have been rising at the school. Teachers tell her about students who have lost family members to COVID-19, who don't have enough food to eat or who were crying or looking tired during a Zoom c......

‘He meant everything’: The profound legacy of a small-town swim coach felled by COVID-19

MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Monmouth College natatorium was as empty and gray as the sky beyond its towering windows on a Friday afternoon in December, the gloom pierced by one striking burst of color — a pair of lemon-yellow Crocs placed on the Lane 4 starting block as a memorial to a man never seen on a pool deck without them. Tom Burek, a retired Illinois State Police lieutenant who coached just about every swim team that exists in this part of western Illinois, died Dec. 12 after a 42-day struggle with COVID-19. He was 62. His death was met by a flood of reminiscences from his swimmers, who recal......

Abbott says vaccine doses 'sitting on hospital shelves' instead of being given to Texans

AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday that "a significant portion" of the more than 600,000 coronavirus vaccines delivered to health care providers in Texas "might be sitting on hospital shelves" rather than being administered to Texans. Saying "no vaccine should be kept in reserve," the state's chief health official ordered providers Tuesday to begin offering vaccinations to people over 65 and those with medical conditions, including pregnancy, that put them at greater risk of a severe case of COVID-19. Dr. John Hellerstedt, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Service......

Labor Dept. judge rules Delta retaliated against whistleblower pilot

A U.S. Department of Labor judge ruled that Delta Air Lines discriminated against a pilot who raised safety concerns by calling into question her psychiatric health. Pilot Karlene Petitt filed an Occupational Safety and Health Administration complaint against the airline in 2016. Petitt said that, after she submitted a report to managers about safety issues, Delta grounded her and referred her for a psychiatric examination by a company doctor who then diagnosed her with bipolar disorder. She was later determined to not suffer from bipolar disorder and, nearly two years after being put on paid ......

More than 100 residents have the coronavirus at San Diego area nursing home

SAN DIEGO — On Christmas Eve morning, a woman stood outside Escondido Post Acute Rehab, talking through a window with her 100-year-old mother, a resident of the facility who has been diagnosed with COVID-19. The two women spoke over the phone for about 15 minutes, waving at one another as two health care workers wearing personal protective equipment worked in the room. The daughter said she was checking on her mom and trying to find out how she was doing after testing positive for the virus while recovering from a dislocated shoulder. Last week, the nursing home earned the distinction of havin......
