Combining blood test with AI may mean more accurate sepsis diagnosis

Combining artificial intelligence (AI) with a simple blood test could help diagnose sepsis faster and single out patients at the highest risk of severe complications from the infection, a study has suggested. The approach could save lives, according to Swedish researchers, who combined the unique molecular signature of sepsis with machine-learning to predict a person’s risk of organ failure and death. Sepsis is life-threatening and can be difficult to spot, accounting for about 11 million deaths each year - almost 20% of all global deaths. Dr Lisa Mellhammar, of Lund University in Sweden, said......

Living near fast food joints and bars could up risk of heart failure

While anyone who wants to stay fit knows to go easy on the booze and fries, it turns out keeping such temptations at a literal distance is key to a healthy heart. Living within a 15 minute walk of pubs and fast food outlets is associated with a greater risk of heart failure, going by health data covering half a million people in Britain. "Compared with those with no exposure to composite ready-to-eat food environments, participants in the highest density score category had a 16% higher risk of [heart failure]," the US-based researchers said, after assessing information from the UK Biobank, a d......

U.S. patient 'happy again' after brain implant treats epilepsy and OCD

Portland (AFP) - American Amber Pearson used to wash her hands until they bled, terrified by the idea of contamination from everyday items, a debilitating result of her obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). But the repetitive rituals of her condition are largely consigned to memory, thanks to a revolutionary brain implant that is being used to treat both her epilepsy and her OCD. "I'm actually present in my daily life and that's incredible," the 34-year-old told AFP. "Before, I was just constantly in my head worrying about my compulsions." Brain implants have hit the headlines recently with Elo......

Hearing aids found to help people live longer

Anyone who is hard of hearing but doesn't wear a hearing aid should think again, as they have been found to help people live longer, according to the University of Southern California (USC). The little over-the-ear wearables do not just offset hearing loss - they are probably life-savers, going by research carried out by the USC's Keck Medicine and published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity, a medical journal. "We found that adults with hearing loss who regularly used hearing aids had a 24% lower risk of mortality than those who never wore them," said Janet Choi, the lead researcher. Pointing t......
