‘Green’ energy, plant food from Florida’s stinky seaweed? Ideas will be put to test

MIAMI -- Seaweed poses all sorts of problems when it piles up on South Florida beaches. It stinks, spoils the view and makes swimming icky. It’s also pricey to haul off to the landfill, which currently is the only viable disposal option. Someday maybe a ton of sargassum might be worth its weight in, if not gold, maybe fertilizer. Turning seaweed into plant food is one of six proposals that Miami-Dade is considering as part of a county effort to find new ways to deal with a seaweed surge that scientists expect climate change will only make worse. Other potential pilot projects could explore con......
Weedkillers are hitting Missouri and Illinois forests. And they’re killing trees.

Weedkillers are hitting Missouri and Illinois forests. And they’re killing trees.

NASHVILLE, Illinois — Agricultural weedkillers are slowly killing trees across Missouri and Illinois, scientists, state workers and landowners say. Landowners say 200-year-old oaks have gotten sickly. State conservation workers are documenting trees with curling leaves and forests with thinning canopies. Scientists have studied hundreds of trees and found widespread evidence of chemicals in their leaves. The signs are spreading across the region, from farms to conservation areas to some of Illinois’ largest forests. Many affected trees have already died or been logged, and experts and property......
How one Napa vineyard might have saved millions of dollars by using birds as pest control

How one Napa vineyard might have saved millions of dollars by using birds as pest control

NAPA, California — On a damp and gray Friday at Bouchaine Vineyards, Rebecca Rosen looked up, noticed the handful of ravens circling above her and lobbed an insult. “Jerks!” she yelled. They flew together, swirling and squawking as she walked to the trunk of her Tesla Model S and pulled out the box. There, she hides her ammo: a 6-year-old Harris’ hawk named Rocky, a 17-year-old falcon named E.B. and a 4-year-old spectacled owl named Hootbert, whose only job is to perch himself on a chair and let some tipsy wine tasters snap a photo. Rocky is the real threat. Rosen pulled him out of the box, re......
Dominicans built a wall to keep Haitians out. Now it’s adding to border tensions.

Dominicans built a wall to keep Haitians out. Now it’s adding to border tensions.

An ongoing border dispute between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which started over the construction of a canal on Haitian soil, grew more tense this week as each side accused the other of unlawfully entering its territory. The latest border clash between the two acrimonious neighbors, which share the island of Hispaniola, unfolded in the vicinity of what’s known as Pyramid 13 on the border area that divides the Dominican Republic and Haiti near the Haitian city of Ounanaminthe. It is also where the Dominican Republic is building a wall inside its territory to keep undocumented Haitians out......

Last nuclear power plant in California may run for another 20 years. Here’s what changed

PG&E has filed its relicensing application to keep California’s last nuclear power plant running 20 years beyond its scheduled closure date. The application was submitted to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Tuesday morning and comes a year and two months after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 846 to allow extended operations at the 2,200-megawatt Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in coastal San Luis Obispo County. PG&E had planned to shut town the plant’s two reactors in 2024 and 2025. The bill came after the state failed to procure enough clean electricity to replace the nuclear ......

Michigan AG's office officially ends Flint prosecutions without any criminal convictions

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office is ending its pursuit of criminal prosecutions over the Flint water crisis after seven years of no convictions, a decision that came Tuesday after the state Supreme Court rejected an attempt to revive charges against former Republican Gov. Rick Snyder. Nessel's Flint prosecution team — led by Chief Deputy Attorney General Fadwa Hammoud and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy — said the Flint water cases are now "closed." Hammoud and Worthy said Tuesday they will release a "full and thorough report" on the office's prosecutorial eff......
