Helicopter goes missing in California with 5 Marines on board

A heavy-lift helicopter with five Marines headed from Nevada to an air base in California Tuesday night has gone missing, authorities said early Wednesday morning. The helicopter, a CH-53E Super Stallion, had departed from Creech Air Force Base in Indian Springs, just outside Las Vegas, Nev. and it was bound to the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, in San Diego, Calif., according to a statement from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. When the aircraft was reported “overdue” in the early hours of Wednesday, the Marines initiated a search for the missing chopper. The Super Stallion was last seen over......

Tourist boat sinks off Cancun; at least 4 dead and several missing

At least four people were dead and others missing after a boat ferrying more than a dozen people sank off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula near Cancun, according to reports. The Goddess of the Sea — or La Diosa del Mar — was journeying from the resort island of Isla Mujeres to nearby Puerto Juárez when the incident occurred on Monday shortly after 6 p.m. Officials told ABC News the vessel caught a strong sea swell and started taking on water in the moments before it went down. A total of 19 people — 16 tourists and three crew members — were aboard at the time. Two adult males, one adult female and o......

59 migrants sent back to Dominican Republic after Coast Guard intercepts 2 vessels

U.S. maritime authorities repatriated 59 migrants to the Dominican Republic on Thursday following the interception of two overloaded vessels in Mona Passage, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea, earlier this week. The first incident happened on Tuesday when aircrew aboard a surveillance aircraft detected a suspect vessel approximately 15 nautical miles (17.2 miles) southwest of Mona Island, Puerto Rico. The vessel was then intercepted by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Confidence who embarked 42 adult migrants, all of whom claimed to be Dominican Republican nationals. The......

USS Mobile Bay, a major player during Operation Desert Storm, will be decommissioned next week in San Diego

The cruiser USS Mobile Bay, which launched 22 Tomahawk cruise missiles during Operation Desert Storm and helped carry people to safety when Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines, will be decommissioned in San Diego on Aug. 10, ending the service life of one of the oldest ships in the Navy. Mobile Bay will become the latest Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser to be sidelined by the Navy, which is phasing out the Cold War-era vessels in favor of the newer Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. The cruisers were designed for a 35-year service life. Mobile Bay was commissioned 36 years ago and ini......

James Cameron compares OceanGate sub implosion to Titanic shipwreck: ‘Warnings went unheeded’ by captains

“Titanic” director James Cameron compared the OceanGate submersible implosion to the original Titanic disaster in an interview Thursday. Cameron, 68, noted the hubris involved in both cases. “I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night and many people died as a result,” he told ABC News. “It’s a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded.” Cameron himself has explored the Titanic wreckage an estimated 33 times, and his 1997 Oscar-wi......

Hangman nooses found aboard Navy destroyer in Virginia

The U.S. Navy is investigating a trio of hangman nooses aboard the Virginia-based destroyer Laboon. Those nooses targeted a specific service member whose name and race were not disclosed, according to Navy Times. They were reportedly found in separate instances near the same sailor’s sleeping rack last month. Lt. Cmdr. Jason S. Fischer told Navy Times the individual targeted was offered a transfer, which was declined. “The ship investigated this incident expeditiously after the rope was discovered,” he said, but provided no further details about the findings of the investigation. This isn’t th......
