Trump stories involving Melania and the Mob were caught and killed: Ex-Trump lawyer

The New Yorker reporter Ronan Farrow was correct when he said Donald Trump was involved in as many as 60 “catch and kill” operations during the 2016 presidential election in which Trump first won power, former Trump lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen said.

“I never actually added them up, but I wouldn't dispute what Ronan is saying,” Cohen told the Court of History podcast. “Every day, there was another story.”

Cohen said some stories that never saw the light of day concerned Trump and his third wife, Melania, while others concerned schemes such as Trump University or alleged connections to organized crime....

‘Too preposterous to be real’: College hires ‘pink slime’ publisher as journalism prof

Editor's note: This article has been updated to include a statement received Friday morning from Scott Christen, associate professor of communication studies and interim chair of the Department of Communication at Tennessee Tech.

A leader of a reported “pink slime” media publication has been hired to teach journalism at Tennessee Tech University, according to a Raw Story review of online records and sources familiar with the situation.

Kyle Barnett, who is publicly cited as a publisher and general manager associated with publications run by Metric Media — a network of more than 1,300 local “pay-for-play” media websites that is reportedly funded by conservative and specialist interest PACs to push political agendas — is slated to teach three undergraduate journalism classes at Tennessee Tech University for the upcoming Spring 2024 semester....

‘Right-wing misinformation’ newspaper gave a GOP presidential candidate up to $5M in salary

Long-shot Republican presidential candidate Larry Elder made between $1 million and $5 million from The Epoch Times, according to a new financial disclosure submitted three months past a federal deadline.

The Epoch Times — accused by the New York Times of being “a leading purveyor of right-wing misinformation” — spent heavily on Facebook ads for Donald Trump in 2020 and was later banned from the platform for violating political transparency rules. The Epoch Times is associated with the Chinese religious movement Falun Gong.

Elder’s filing, covering the past year and first reported by Raw Story on Monday, characterized his earnings from The Epoch Times as “salary.” ...

Raided Kansas newspaper is known for aggressively covering small town’s many disputes

Sharon Kelsey had come to the Marion County Record on Monday afternoon to place resurrection lilies next to a red newspaper box outside the weekly paper in the small central-Kansas town. Kelsey, a subscriber whose paper gets passed between her sons, was “very upset” about a Friday police search of the Record’s newsroom, which was quickly criticized as the story spread across the U.S. Police also searched the home of the paper’s co-owners, Eric Meyer and his 98-year-old mother, Joan Meyer. She died the next day. “I feel like things in this country aren’t going right,” said Kelsey, a longtime Ma......
Inside the Republican playbook for crushing press freedoms

Inside the Republican playbook for crushing press freedoms

A bill in Florida that’s supported by Gov. Ron DeSantis would make it easier to sue journalists for defamation, and press freedom advocates say such a change in the law would be extremely dangerous. The bill would seemingly violate a Supreme Court ruling that established these press protections, New York Times v. Sullivan, but it appears the bill may be an effort to get the Supreme Court to reconsider that decision and, as former President Trump once put it, “open up” libel laws.

The bill, HB 991, was introduced by Florida state Rep. Alex Andrade, a Republican. It would redefine “actual malice” to make it easier to win a defamation suit against a journalist. Actual malice is the term used to determine if a journalist knew what they were writing about a public figure was false or should have known it was false. The bill would also change who can be considered a “public figure” under the law.

“The New York Times v. Sullivan ‘actual malice’ rule applies when the plaintiff is a public official or a public figure, and the courts have defined the category of public figure pretty broadly,” Samantha Barbas, a law professor at the University at Buffalo who focuses on First Amendment law, told Raw Story. ...

‘Dilbert’ newspaper flap brings renewed focus on cartoonist Scott Adams’ many controversies

“Dilbert” cartoonist Scott Adams’ recent announcement that his popular comic strip exploring the office culture grind was being trimmed out of dozens of newspapers is drawing renewed attention to the 65-year-old creator’s many controversies and sometimes NSFW politics, which have taken on a life of their own over the years. “Dilbert was cancelled in 77 newspapers this week,” the Windham, New York, native tweeted last week. The papers said to have cut ties with Dilbert are owned by Lee Enterprises, which reportedly revamped its funny pages in print and did away with numerous comic strips. Adams......
