Pulse sale closes, Orlando now owns nightclub property

ORLANDO, Fla. — Pulse nightclub is officially city property. City officials closed the $2 million sale Friday morning, setting the stage for what they have said will be a transparent effort toward building a public memorial on the site of one of the nation’s deadliest mass shootings. The land, where the former nightclub still stands today surrounded by a rainbow photo wall, was owned by Barbara and Rosario Poma, as well as Daytona Beach businessman Michael Panaggio. Last week, Mayor Buddy Dyer told the Orlando Sentinel the city had reached a deal to purchase the property and planned to build a......

Someone shot a spear through a sea turtle’s head in Florida Keys. Doctors couldn't save him

MIAMI — Veterinarians in the Florida Keys did all they could to save a loggerhead sea turtle found last week with a spear through its head. But by Saturday, they made the difficult decision to euthanize the federally protected reptile. The Turtle Hospital on Marathon Key began caring for the turtle, which workers named Aubie (for Auburn University), last Thursday when a guest at a Long Key resort found him in distress. A steel spear was sticking out of his head and one of his front flippers was entangled in fishing line. While many sea creatures become entangled in monofilament fishing line, T......
Coyotes are roaming South Florida neighborhoods. Why they’re around and what to fear.

Coyotes are roaming South Florida neighborhoods. Why they’re around and what to fear.

Florida author and humorist Craig Pittman posted an observation to Facebook that could surprise some suburb dwellers who figured coyotes were a part of the American Southwest and the hapless foil in old “Road Runner” Looney Tunes cartoons. “A few days back, around dusk, my wife and I turned our car into our neighborhood headed for home and spotted what appeared to be a coyote,” Pittman wrote from his St. Petersburg neighborhood. “We circled the block and came back for another look and sure enough, that’s what it was. The next day, again at dusk, we saw the coyote again, but we haven’t spotted ......

Florida doles out $50 million to contractor providing DeSantis Israel flights

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Emergency management officials have authorized up to nearly $50 million in taxpayer dollars to one contractor for open-ended charter flights since Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered the state to bring Floridians home from Israel two weeks ago, public records show. State officials have offered little information about who’s involved in helping Americans leave Israel amid the war with Hamas, besides identifying Project Dynamo, a Tampa-based nonprofit international rescue group founded by ex-military personnel helping to run the mission. So it’s unclear if all of the money is going to ......

Mexico is hosting several countries to discuss regional migration. The US is not among them

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador — whose country is a pass-through for the record-number of people trying to reach the United States — has invited Latin American and Caribbean leaders to meet this weekend to tackle the tide of migrants overwhelming governments across the hemisphere. Sunday’s meeting will take place in Palenque, a city in the southern state of Chiapas, a gateway for migrants coming into Mexico that borders Guatemala. It comes nearly a year and a half after the Biden administration hosted the Ninth Summit of the Americas, in which Mexico, the United States and other......
