Groups push for Dems, independents to vote against Trump in South Carolina GOP primary

COLUMBIA, S.C. — If former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is going to win, or at least beat expectations against former President Donald Trump in the Feb. 24 First in the South presidential primary, she’ll need independents to show up and possibly Democratic voters to cross over. And with less than a week to go before the South Carolina GOP primary, groups are stepping up efforts to turnout non-Republicans to the state’s open primary that allows anyone who didn’t vote in the Democratic contest to vote in the Republican nominating contest. It uniquely supports two major roadways atop floating bridges, has offered beachgoers a summertime respite for decades and is central to the identity of the Seattle area's culture. But Lake Washington is changing — by over half a degree Fahrenheit each recent decade. In fact, since 1963, the lake's surface from June to September has warmed about 4.3 degrees, according to data collected and analyzed by King County and the University of Washington. While some of the lake's war......

As deaths climb, NYC mulls e-bike crackdown under new agency planned by Mayor Eric Adams

Deputy Mayor Meera Joshi — who is leading Adams’ push to design and establish what some informally call the Department of Sustainable Delivery — told the New York Daily News the agency “will regulate new forms of delivery transit and ensure their safety.” “The equipment that you’re going to use to do that delivery has to be inspected,” said Joshi. “There has to be some oversight to ensure that it’s safe.” Joshi, who......

The story of the Dolly Vardens, a 19th-century baseball team made up of Black women

PHILADELPHIA — In May 1883, in the Lamokin Woods in Chester, a group of Black women strode down a hill. Leading them was Ella Harris, who wore a fashionable pink calico dress and a white jockey cap. She hoisted a baseball bat over one shoulder. The red ribbon pinned to her dress distinguished her as the captain of the Philadelphia Dolly Vardens, a baseball team fully composed of Black women. Her team wasn’t alone in the woods; a large crowd of people of all ages and races had gathered, awaiting the game that had been announced the day before. “The thought of seeing a match between girls offere......
